You create the image of an object, a creature, or some other visible phenomenon that is no larger than a 15-foot cube. The image appears at a spot within range and lasts for the duration. The image is purely visual; it isn't accompanied by sound, smell, or other sensory effects.
You can use your action to cause the image to move to any spot within range. As the image changes location, you can alter its appearance so that its movements appear natural for the image. For example, if you create an image of a creature and move it, you can alter the image so that it appears to be walking.
Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it. A creature that uses its action to examine the image can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the creature can see through the image.

Yes, that's what I was referring to. You cannot cast Silent Image while you yourself are silenced. Additionally, most images are silent anyways.
So there's nothing really special about "Silent Image" to annotate the use of calling it "Silent". That was my main complaint. It seems odd to me. Yeah, I know it's probably there to differentiate it from Minor Illusion as this one specifically cannot make sounds, but yeah. Just a weird thought in my head that made me go "oh yeah, that IS weird"
My favorite Part of this spell is the last sentence: "If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the creature can see through the image."
Because that means you can use it to cast a fog clour or any other image that would realisticly be able to hide people inside while not stopping projectiles, and until the enemy enters the area or uses an action to find out its an illusion, everyone inside who you tell its an illusion can attack from inside the Illusion while being invisible towards the enemy.
Its like having Devil Sight in Darkness. And as a Warlock, you can do that at will.
Ita concentration so as soon as you cast the 2nd one the first disappears
Could you use this to turn invisible by by making an illusion that you are not there
This is exactly what I do with my sorlock. Illusion fog/mist/smoke/foliage to get adv on my agonizing pew pew. Once I get major image I’ll start creating firestorms, swarms of wasps, and other things that people wouldn’t usually investigate.
I think I'm gonna have my Kalashtar Way of the Astral Self Monk take this as the Eldritch Adept feat and use it to play dragon chess "with himself" the idea being he casts this, recasting it every 10 minutes and to everyone around him it would look like he was playing chess with himself, and I could even go as far to say that it's with he's playing with his Quori form. I realize that the silent image couldn't actually move the pieces, but I could get my astral arms with 10ft reach to move the pieces for a ki point and no one would be the wiser. Serves no purpose other than being a cool visual, but still.
Contrast with Major Image, which can be more than just visual.
Use it to cover up a pit trap. Then have a glyph of warding at the bottom of the pit that casts summon aberration or another summoning spell of your choice. You can then trap your enemy in a pit with a star spawn, which will slowly break down the creature's mind to oblivion. You could also make the pit 5-ft. wide, the exact size of a cloud of daggers. They won't be able to escape the daggers, which are auto-hit. If they somehow manage to jump, spider climb, or fly out, have your strongest melee fighters be waiting at the top. That's, if they are a spellcaster. If they can't fly, climb, jump, or cast spells, it's basically over for them.
I dont think this would work because "Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion" right?
Oops, idk how to delete this
Ah, it's called Silent Image because the illusion cannot make any sounds (or smells for that matter). As a fun addition, Minor Illusion can create smells and sounds, and so hypothetically you could bolster Silent Image with these effects.
You would have to keep in mind that it takes an action to update the Silent Image and to cast Minor Illusion. So, you would not be able to create things like footsteps for your creature as there would be a 6 second delay between the feet touching the ground, and the sound being made.
A favourite monster to create is then something incorporeal or foul smelling. As a DM, I would award creative illusions to get around problems with a higher DC. And there are many solutions to any given problem, so go nuts
Right. As I said, I know the intent was likely to differentiate this from other spells that can do more than just make an illusionary image. But why not call it "Silent Illusion" instead? An image is, by default, silent unless stated to be otherwise.
That's literally all I'm saying- it's weird that they call it *Silent image* specifically. I'm not asking WHY it's called that, as I'm pretty sure we're on the same page as to the intent for the name.
But it's still weird to me, even if I know what the intent is, especially when there's alternatives to avoid the weirdness.
Ive thought the same. I use this instead of darkness and devils sight combo on my hexblade. Telling your party about the illusion fog lets them attack without the darkness disadvantage.
Mischief Managed! Brilliant.
You can use it to make it seem like you summoned the demogorgon; or any creature that is huge or smaller
I have a player who used this to invent Powerpoint in game
Since the Invisibility spell does not affect objects or spells, could this essentially be used to make these invisible?
I just imagine launching Fireball in the dark while cloaking it with Silent Image. The spell's range is 60ft and there is no limit to its movement speed.
Step 1 - illusion wizard, level 14
Step 2 - Either 2 warlock or that feat that gives you invocations, grabbing Misty Visions with it
Step 3 - be in a sticky situation (easier done than said)
Step 4 - Make an illusory hole in the wall and use your BA feature from 14 wizard to make the hole real
Optional step/variation - cast it on the ground where you know there’s room under your feet and use the same BA from wiz 14
Step 5 - jump through said hole
Step 6 - dispel the illusion immediately
Step 7 - shout, at the top of your lungs, “MEEP MEEP”
Step 8 - become the roadrunner
Hi JenniCharming,
I want to try this from my pact of chain warlock with Imp Familiar.
I cannot find this spell for warlock.
