You gain the ability to move or manipulate creatures or objects by thought. When you cast the spell, and as your action each round for the duration, you can exert your will on one creature or object that you can see within range, causing the appropriate effect below. You can affect the same target round after round, or choose a new one at any time. If you switch targets, the prior target is no longer affected by the spell.
Creature. You can try to move a Huge or smaller creature. Make an ability check with your spellcasting ability contested by the creature's Strength check. If you win the contest, you move the creature up to 30 feet in any direction, including upward but not beyond the range of this spell. Until the end of your next turn, the creature is restrained in your telekinetic grip. A creature lifted upward is suspended in mid-air.
On subsequent rounds, you can use your action to attempt to maintain your telekinetic grip on the creature by repeating the contest.
Object. You can try to move an object that weighs up to 1,000 pounds. If the object isn't being worn or carried, you automatically move it up to 30 feet in any direction, but not beyond the range of this spell.
If the object is worn or carried by a creature, you must make an ability check with your spellcasting ability contested by that creature's Strength check. If you succeed, you pull the object away from that creature and can move it up to 30 feet in any direction but not beyond the range of this spell.
You can exert fine control on objects with your telekinetic grip, such as manipulating a simple tool, opening a door or a container, stowing or retrieving an item from an open container, or pouring the contents from a vial.
What if I want to steal a worn weapon from a sleeping NPC using this spell? Do they still get to make a strength-saving throw? Is it at disadvantage?
I know the rules say "If the object is worn or carried by a creature, you must make an ability check with your spellcasting ability contested by that creature's Strength check. If you succeed, you pull the object away from that creature and can move it up to 30 feet in any direction but not beyond the range of this spell", but I would think that since they aren't conscious to contest the spell it should either succeed or be at least with disadvantage.
do you think you could use this spell to use a weapon? like since it says:
”You can exert fine control on objects with your telekinetic grip, such as manipulating a simple tool…”
would melee weapons could as simple tools? or no?
I have some questions regarding this spell.
yes.
What happens if two people use telekinesis on the same object. Does the weight limit double? If your in conflict with the other caster would you need to make contesting roles?
If you mean levitate, then no, since the target can't weigh more than 500 lbs, and it floats gently to the ground when the spell ends, so no damage.
Probably impossible, but it'd be cool if you could make weapons made out of compressed air with this...
This doesn't say that you can't use it to attack, like Mage Hand does. Does that mean you can use this to attack with a melee weapon? You can use the weapon to attack as part of an action that is exerting "fine control" over it?
So basically, telekinesis is a more powerful version of Mage Hand, but without fine motor skills.
I think what some people miss in the debate between this and Bigby's Hand is that BH is an actual object that needs to be moved to affect a target, whereas each turn Telekinesis can be targeted anywhere within range
The spell states "you can exert fine control on objects with your telekinetic grip", whereas mage hand never states anything along those lines (in fact Rules As Written mage hand can only do a limited set of specific tasks as listed in the description), if you are an Arcane Trickster then Mage Hand Legerdumaine also gives you some extra things to add to that list (such as something using thieves' tools using a single magic hand).
You could, but you could also just cast fly on yourself to do the same thing, it's a lower level spell and it would be easier to do.
You could try, it would require a check. I think it would be a strength check since to normally pick someone up with it is also a strength saving throw.
Not to mention the creature would be restrained, and continue to take damage afterwards.
Better still, if it's a Lore Bard not only do they get to add half proficiency to the contest, they can also use Cutting Words to make it much harder for the enemy.
Can I cast this to rip off one of the wings of a creature?
Like say a dragon or a demon/angel like big bad?
You move the whole creature, not just its wings. And if you choose to target an object, a part of a living creature is not considered an object.
Mega rip.
Literally. lmao. Ah well.
you can just cast Fly for that, better performance aswell
I high level lore bard could basically take any item from anyone with this. 20 CHA (+5), Jack of all trades (+2 when you get the spell, +3 at level 17), Glibness (can't roll less than a 15 on charisma checks) means your telekinesis check can't be less than 23. And if for some reason that is not enough, you can cutting words to reduce the opponent's strength check & use peerless skill to add to yours. Heavily resource intensive, but if you simply have to steal the caster's focus or some crazy weapon, doesn't this have to be your automatic win button?
