Until the spell ends, bits of rock spread across your body, and you gain the following benefits:
-
You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks.
-
You can use your action to create a small earthquake on the ground in a 15-foot radius centered on you. Other creatures on that ground must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
-
You can move across difficult terrain made of earth or stone without spending extra movement. You can move through solid earth or stone as if it was air and without destabilizing it, but you can’t end your movement there. If you do so, you are ejected to the nearest unoccupied space, this spell ends, and you are stunned until the end of your next turn.
So lets say that you attack someone while your under the effect of this spell and then decide to run away. Normally the enemy could make an opportunity attack. But if you just sink into the ground and THEN walk away they wouldn’t be able to hit you. Because they can take their opportunity attack when you leave their reach, going underground does not provoke one as long as you stay within 5 feet of them. So if you dive underground first and then leave they can use their reaction to only attack the ground between you and them. You can basically play whack-a-mole with the enemy where you are the mole... but with knives.
I think this would be dependent upon DM interpretation. On one had your right, you're technically within range of the enemies attacks. On the other you would be leaving their reach as you sink into the ground. While I agree that the former way of thinking makes more sense; I could see both rulings occuring.
As a DM, I would argue that the creature could not make the opportunity attack as the creature merged into stone because it has not left it's reach. 5 foot reach applies in any direction. If you think of it as a 3 dimensional grid, merging down still keeps the target within range the same way that a flying creature who is 5 feet off the ground is still within reach of the target.
I'd rule it doesn't trigger AoO, in part because they can't end their turn in the ground and it's a 6th level concentration spell. If they want to play whack a mole, this is best used through castle walls ghost-style instead of floors.
If you wanted to get inside a treasure room and unlock it from inside, or loot and leave, this is good.
So a thought with this.. Sorlock with Eldritch blast and the repelling blast invocation. Come up directly under the target, quicken Eldritch blast (let's say lv 11) so target goes up 30ft (3 beams) then the standard action Eldritch blast for 30ft more (60ft up) = (6d10 Eldritch plus probably 24 agonizing) then 60ft of falling damage. That's assuming they all hit.
Do I have to make a roll for this to activate?
No, spells just are cast if you use your Action to do so (unless it takes a Bonus Action or Reaction). The only chance roll for spells to be cast is in a Wild-magic Zone.
Personally I'm quite disappointed by this spell since all the other Investitures give you immunity, which is infinitely better than resistance - you can get that from just Stoneskin.
I guess it's a balance thing, and I'm not a bladesinger so I don't find this quite so useful for moving around.
Would it be possible to pull a creature of the same size as you into the ground with investiture of stone if you are under them?
How about this scenario...someone is on top of a stone column. If they cast this spell, do they start to fall and therefore, the character isn’t using any movement? And could essentially fall through the entire height of the column until they chose to end concentration and then get kicked out into open space?
just use a xorn only a 5th level spell slot and you are not the one who gets caught
