A 10-foot Emanation springs into existence around you and remains stationary for the duration. The spell fails when you cast it if the Emanation isn’t big enough to fully encapsulate all creatures in its area.
Creatures and objects within the Emanation when you cast the spell can move through it freely. All other creatures and objects are barred from passing through it. Spells of level 3 or lower can’t be cast through it, and the effects of such spells can’t extend into it.
The atmosphere inside the Emanation is comfortable and dry, regardless of the weather outside. Until the spell ends, you can command the interior to have Dim Light or Darkness (no action required). The Emanation is opaque from the outside and of any color you choose, but it’s transparent from the inside.
The spell ends early if you leave the Emanation or if you cast it again.

I have a few questions...,
"Creatures and objects within the Emanation when you cast the spell can move through it freely."
This would mean that missile weapons could freely pass from inside to out, but I believe extra rulings overwrote that, however is this the latest new 'gold standard' that overrides previous rulings, therefore you could shoot through it? Do previous external rulings hold sway still? I do believe that there may be some contradictions if that is the case?
"Spells of level 3 or lower can’t be cast through it, and the effects of such spells can’t extend into it." This is an interesting new addition. It specifically says spells, For greater than 3rd level does that exclude spell effects from sources that are not spells or may have in some way an equivalent level?
The spell has gone back to the original 10ft radius and dropped all discussion on hemispheres etc. One can only assume that a sphere cuts through all in that 10 ft radius sphere. Force is not mentioned at all. Could a team excavate that area entirely? Does it cut through everything else, no exceptions? If so it may broaden its uses considerably?
What happens if you were to be falling in open air for the required time and cast it, you would be held statically in place for 8 hours? (I wonder if you would take falling damage from the sudden stop when it was created?), would you fall through the bottom?
Currently on a sea campaign, if you cast it on a ship, would the parts outside the casting area suddenly prevent the ship moving? assuming that some parts of the ship would now be outside and cannot enter?
If you cast it on a small boat with an amount of water below you, the spell says "The atmosphere inside the Emanation is comfortable and dry, regardless of the weather outside. " Does that mean all the water is excluded or remains in it?
"The spell fails when you cast it if the Emanation isn’t big enough to fully encapsulate all creatures in its area."
So when we talk about all creatures we mean those that are part in and part out as opposed to all creatures, and creature is defined as an animal, and we shall ignore anything that is not a plant? Sucks if you happen to bisect an earth worm!
Obviously we can provide DM responses to all of these to adapt to gameplay, but it would be interesting to hear the official interpretation of how this is meant to be implemented. Subsequent to that different interpretations by DM's and players are welcome.
This is just not a good use of Emanation, and as noted, having it sweep below you causes problems of its own. Put it back to being a dome, with a floor for clarity.
The change to not block spells of higher than its own level is certainly reasonable, it doesn't make sense a 3rd-level spell can block a 9th level one, but that change means it would be good if it came with an upcast option - if you cast it with a higher slot, it can block spells of that level and below. (Casting it as a ritual = no upcast.)
Where in the D&D Free Rules is this. I see it says "pg. 291" but it isn't there. The only way to find it is by searching for it.
Alright, Jeremy... I was all for the term "Emanation" since it cleared up different uses in spells like daylight (attaching it as an Emanation to an object or creature, or else making it a stationary Sphere), but this is ridiculous. Why doesn't it just say Sphere or Dome? This implies that the hut moves with the caster instead of just being placed on the ground. If you're going to invent a new term, then please stick to it!
As for the Emanation going below the caster, the rules for Area of Effect state that a point isn't considered in the spell effect if there isn't an unobstructed straight line from the point of origin to it. Being underground is considered having Total Cover, so no point under the surface would be part of the Emanation. Considering creatures in the AoE when the spell is cast can move freely through the area, if there is no ground for the creatures to rest on they would fall through unless they have a flying speed. The Emanation would remain where it was cast because it specifically states that it is stationary in the spell.
"The spell ends early if you leave the Emanation or if you cast it again."
So wait, if my mage has to pee in the middle of the night he has to go inside the hut?
Jep. Pee in a Bottle -> put the Bottle inside Bag of Holding Pee and sleep well. Or maybe you can leave with your Ding-Dong out an stay inside the Emanation or just piss from inside out, because everyting that was in it before casting, can pass free. ;)
New fireball shelter goes crazy
At last, finally fixed.
Spells of level 3 or lower can’t be cast through it, and the effects of such spells can’t extend into it.
If I upcast Fireball (or any other spell 1st - 3rd) at 4th level or higher does it penetrate LTH?
Yes, because the spell would be 4th-level
That's an editorial mistake. As far as I'm aware there isn't a print nor pdf version of the free rules available, therefore page numbers are irrelevant. Looking at the legacy spell description here on DDB it references the 2014 PHB. So, with that in mind I grabbed my physical copy of the 2024 PHB and it is in fact on pg. 291.
Is Tiny Hut then obsolete?
Any word or idea on magical abilities or effects that aren’t explicitly spells? The 2014 version mentioned that, but all we get is 3rd level or lower spells. I went to the new Rakshasa stat block to see how it was managed, and they straight up made them beefier by allowing them to succeed on anything and all spell attacks fail.
The new spell text says:
> Creatures and objects within the Emanation when you cast the spell can move through it freely. All other creatures and objects are barred from passing through it. Spells of level 3 or lower can’t be cast through it, and the effects of such spells can’t extend into it.
1. Do upcast spells pass through? (I think yes)
2. What about other magical abilities that aren’t spells? Do those go through or are they blocked? Are they blocked up to a certain power/player/CR level?
3. If you cast a level 2 AOE spell targeted on a location inside it, will the effects extend through the barrier outwards? Text only says into. Is it counted as casting through the barrier if the emanation/cube/cone etc extends beyond it but the initial target casting point starts inside?
"...objects within the Emanation when you cast the spell can move through it freely."
So PCs inside LTH can shoot arrows from inside at creatures outside but not vice versa, correct?
Tough luck, we don't care just buy out next 39.99$ book. Thanks.

"An Emanation’s origin (creature or object) isn’t included in the area of effect unless its creator decides otherwise."
The caster can decide to include the space they occupy as the centre square, with the Emanation of the hut extending 10 feet beyond that in all directions (ie. 25 feet across).
This spell's description is messed up. WOTC really needs to work on their descriptions of things. They thought they were so clear and clever "simplifying" the language used in their descriptions but then didn't get enough smart people to rip them apart and put them back together, like you guys in this post. I find most of the description changes in general in 2024 to be a mess and created at least as many problems as they fixed. (They needed more fat guys with beards on the team lol.) It doesn't help that most (luckily not all) of the YouTube vloggers are sycophants of WOTC instead of giving them some good constructive criticism of what they just produced. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of what came out in 2024/25 but IMO there's an equal amount of confusing and incongruent garbage in lame attempts to "fix" or reorganize something. They need to focus more on clarity/completeness and less on DEI content.
