A frigid globe streaks from you to a point of your choice within range, where it explodes in a 60-foot-radius Sphere. Each creature in that area makes a Constitution saving throw, taking 10d6 Cold damage on failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
If the globe strikes a body of water, it freezes the water to a depth of 6 inches over an area 30 feet square. This ice lasts for 1 minute. Creatures that were swimming on the surface of frozen water are trapped in the ice and have the Restrained condition. A trapped creature can take an action to make a Strength (Athletics) check against your spell save DC to break free.
You can refrain from firing the globe after completing the spell’s casting. If you do so, a globe about the size of a sling bullet, cool to the touch, appears in your hand. At any time, you or a creature you give the globe to can throw the globe (to a range of 40 feet) or hurl it with a sling (to the sling’s normal range). It shatters on impact, with the same effect as a normal casting of the spell. You can also set the globe down without shattering it. After 1 minute, if the globe hasn’t already shattered, it explodes.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d6 for each spell slot level above 6.
* - (a miniature crystal sphere)
Using the second part of the spell sounds like a trap, as you can not throw/hurl it far enough not to be caught in the radius yourself.
Yeah you can sling or drop it at least to stay out of range.
I feel like this has potential for the best time stop bomb
Note the wording when using the sling - you can hurl it up to its normal range, which is 30 feet, which places you well within its area.
Yeah makes more sense in that case for a familiar to dive bomb your enemies. Magic drone familiars be wild. For style points use a sling with time stop (nice cryo bomb layer). And a practical addition (use cover, full cover can shield you if you really want to get some damage from the sling or make it an instant blast you shoot). Could be an alernate to readying the spell (using concentration already).
Slap in a delayed blast fireball and we got some temperature shock.
Absolutely, but imagine if you had misty step or a way to teleport for free and just leave all the ice marbles at there feet for however long you can time stop. Then just cast another marble when the time stop ends and your far away enough. No sling necessary. But this is just level 20 hi jinks!
Are we looking at the same spell? Because I read 300, not 30 for the range. Maybe you got it confused with Otiluke's other ball, the Resilient Sphere?
It says the *sling's* normal range, not the spell's
Note that by this level you should have ample access to flying, so you could drop it on a large enemy force from high above. A draconic sorcerer can also fly, make themselves invisible, and stealth bomb from a thousand feet in the air.
