Base Class: Monk
Monks of the Zen Balance live life on the edge. While searching for true Zen many interactions, altercations and events happen. When a Monk of the Zen Balance loses their zen they become powerful and chaotic. The longer they live the life of Zen Balance the more control they have over their Zen and their Chaos.
Zen and Chaos
When you choose this tradition at 3rd level you gain the following benefits:
Upon entering battle you start off Zen. While in the heat of battle if you Critically strike an enemy, or an enemy critically strikes you, you enter a state of Chaos. While in a state of Chaos rolling a critical failure sends you back into a state of Zen.
-While in a state of Zen you are able to easily control the battlefield and pick out threats. On your turn when making an attack of opportunity you may spend a ki point if the attack hits to reduce their movement speed to 0 until the start of their next turn.
-While in a state of Chaos you are able to spend a ki point after spending your reaction to regain your reaction until the start of your next turn.
The Razors Edge
Starting at 6th level the line that you walk between Chaos and Zen gets ever thinner, but your control over it improves as well.
You now enter a state of Chaos from rolling an 18, 19 or 20 when making an attack roll. You now enter a state of Zen when rolling a 1, 2 or 3 when making an attack roll. You can also spend a bonus action to Change from Chaos back to Zen.
-While in a state of Chaos you may choose to spend a Ki point to make a strike with disadvantage and if it hits you can add your level worth of Damage to the damage roll.
-While in a state of Zen you may spend your bonus action to regenerate Ki points equal to 1/4 of your level. Once you use this feature you must take a short rest before being able to use it again.
Equilibrium
At level 11 you gain full control over the line between Zen and Chaos and are able to use both to your advantage.
You may now switch between Zen and Chaos as a bonus action on your turn.
-While in a state of Chaos you may spend a Ki point after an attack misses you to make an unarmed strike on the target.
-While in a state of Zen you may spend a Ki point after an attack misses you to disengage from the target.
Permanent Zen, Permanent Chaos
At 17th level you master both states of Zen and Chaos and are able to balance both at the same time.
You now are under the state of Zen and Chaos at the same time. You may use any of the features listed as requiring states of Zen or Chaos.
- You may now attempt to control an enemies state when making an unarmed strike against it. When an unarmed strike hits an enemy, you may spend 5 ki points. If you do choose either Zen or Chaos. If you choose Zen the creature must make a wisdom saving throw. On a fail they drop to 0 hit points. On a success they take 8d12 Radiant damage. If you choose Chaos the creature must make a constitution saving throw. If they fail deal damage equivalent to 10 unarmed strikes.
Damn, started really well then went too OP for my tastes. But great concept!
"On your turn when making an attack of opportunity you may spend a ki point if the attack hits to reduce their movement speed to 0 until the start of their next turn." - Should be "Once per Round when making an...". Or just "When making an attack of opportunity...".
The Razors Edge - not sure about the Zen feature. You already get them back on a Short Rest, using a BA to get some back is too much IMO. The improved "crit range" is a bit too much too. I'd keep it to 1,2,19,20 - "basically" the same as a Champion Fighter.
Permanent Zen, Permanent Chaos - Always on, and one hit kill ability is way too OP. I'd suggest for Zen just the 8d12 on a fail, and half on a save. Use the standard mechanics. For the Chaos, i like the flavour, but i'd say maybe just give a Flurry of Blows on each attack made for 1 minute? Might actually end up being worse though, haven't done the math.
