Base Class: Monk
Like all Haruchai, Monks of the Way of the Fallen Haruchai are masters of martial arts unarmed combat They learn techniques to attack, protect, and, in turn, punish their opponents as well as manipulate ki to pursue physical perfection, honing their body as a smith sharpens a sword.
With the corruption of the Bloodguard, shame and grief had become more terrible than any other fate for the Haruchai. Compounded by centuries of abhorrent actions against them, against Law, and against Earthpower, their hearts have been hardened. The Monks who follow The Way of the Fallen Haruchai have acquired an awakening or realization, whether through self-reflection, compulsion, or harsh reality. It has been expressed that they heard laughter, which eased their pride and shame, and the kindliness of that laughter eased their fear of grief. In the eyes of the Haruchai, these Fallen set themselves against the will of their people and endeavor to impose their will and shame upon the proud people of the Haruchai race.
If you choose The Way of the Fallen Hauruchi, you are brutally ostracized in a one-sided Rite of Disapproval. A handful of Haruchai each take turns making one crippling strike against you, and you must take the blow. You can, however, move to avoid baneful damage and broken bones (In other words, if an attacker rolls a critical, you can make a Dexterity saving throw to turn it into a normal hit). Once the Rite of Disapproval is completed, no Haruchai will raise a hand against you again, but you are banished and can never go home to your mountains, to your mate, or to your family. While they still maintain their connection to the Unimind, the true speech of the Haruchai, they are ignored if they attempt to communicate telepathically.
Fallen Haruchai can wield weapons, wear armor, and use magic; however, using magical weapons will diminish some of your fighting abilities granted through Earthpower. The banishment has lessened your healing capacity, so Monks of this order will use magical healing of any kind. You are still good by nature, but can be neutral and/or chaotic. One has yet to encounter a Fallen Haruchai who has descended to the depths of Corruption.
Crushing Fist
At 3rd level, when you choose this tradition, your people will (or have already ) brutally banish you in the Rite of Disapproval because you have been shamed in their eyes. You and the DM need to determine if you have already been through the Rite of Disapproval or will go through it as you choose this subclass.
As a result, you no longer need to shun the use of weapons, armor, and magic. Most Fallen Haruchai still avoid weapons and armor, but all will make use of magic--especially healing magic. Before your banishment, you lived and trained as arduously as all Haruchai.
Due to your rigorous training and harsh living environment, your damage die increases for unarmed strikes. You can roll a d6 in place of the normal damage for your Unarmed Strike (Steel Strike) and Flurry of Blows (Fists of Fury). This die changes to a d8 at 5th level; a d10 at 11th level; and 2d6 at 17th level. This increased damage can be applied to Steel Strike and Fists of Fury. Note. Since D&D Beyond will not allow attack damage to be changed, for this subclass, I've changed "Unarmed Attack" to Steel Strike and "Flurry of Blows" to Fists of Fury. All attacks will appear on the Character Sheet, but only Steel Strike and Fists of Fury will have the improved damage. All rules that apply to "Flurry of Blows" also apply to Fists of Fury.
Free Choice
At 3rd Level since the Fallen Haruchai believe in the power of their own choices even more than the Haruchai Warrior, your Percipience enhances into an Earth Sense giving you advantage on saving throws to the condition of being charmed, frightened, or possessed.
With your free spirit, you have developed a Reckless Bash, such as a shoulder check or Headbutt. You take damage equal to the damage you deal with this strike, and the target must succeed on a Constitution (DC = 8 + Proficiency bonus + Strength modifier) saving throw or become stunned until the end of your next turn. You may use this attack as a Reaction.
Body and Fist
At 6th level, you gain the ability to heal yourself. As an action, you can regain hit points equal to two times your monk level. You must finish a long rest before you can use this feature again.
Earthpower and training have given you the ability to attack with a High Kick. The range for your High Kick is 10 feet (This does not stack with other abilities). Whenever you hit a creature with a High Kick, you can impose one of the following effects on that target:
- It must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
- It must make a Strength saving throw. If it fails, you can shove it up to 15 feet away from you.
- It can’t take reactions until the end of your next turn.
If you are wearing armor, shield, and/or melee weapon, you cannot perform this kick.
Battle Sight
Beginning at 11th level Earthpower strengthens your unarmed attacks, and your Earth Sense as well as your battle experience have sharpened your combat senses to extraordinary heights giving you the following benefits.
- Runic Fists: for the cost of 2 Ki Points, +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. You can spend 6 Ki Points in this manner, and it lasts for 1 minute. You only earn this benefit if you are not using a magical weapon.
- Disarm. As an Reaction and the cost of 2 Ki Points, you force an opponent to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the opponent is disarmed, and if you are unarmed, you will have the weapon in your hands.
- Discerning Karma. You have learned to block all Haruchai from telepathically listening to your verbal and mental conversations, yet you are not blocked from listening to their conversations.
- Liberty. You now have Immunity from being frightened.
- Renew. Once per day during a Short Rest, you regain Ki Points equal to your Wisdom Modifier +1.
Irresistible Offense
Ability Score Increase. Increase your Strength, Dexterity, or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 22.
Overcome Defenses. The Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage you deal counts as Force (Earthpower) damage now for the sake of overcoming resistances and immunities.
Overwhelming Strike. When an enemy is prone, stunned, or has disadvantage within melee range on your turn you can choose to forego all extra attacks and advantage on attack rolls to perform a single unarmed attack that deals 8d8 + your damage modifier in Force (Earthpower) Damage.
This Monk Subclass is based on Haruchai characters, Cail and Stave, from The Second and Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson.
