Base Class: Monk
Those that follow the path of the Obsidian Soul believe that to reach perfection one must temper the mind, body and spirit through the pain of rigorous training. Only by constantly pushing yourself can you break through your limits, the promise of perfection is worth the the risks. You seek out those more powerful than you in order to test yourself and will not be satisficed until your strikes can bring giants to their knees and dragons from the sky.
The Narrow Path
When you choose this path at 3rd level, you may not have any levels in other classes and cannot multiclass. Those who teach this path expect nothing less than fanatical devotion and are careful to weed out those they deem unworthy or lacking conviction.
Your training has hardened your body, leaving you with scars that testify to your dedication. When you deal damage with your unarmed strikes, you can choose whether the damage is bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing.
Brutal Training
At 3rd level, you gain the following benefits:
- Efficient Sustenance: You require only half the normal amount of food and water to survive.
- Tranquil Meditation: You may meditate instead of sleeping to gain the full benefits of a long rest. You remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings during this meditation. At 11th level, you reduce the amount of sleep you need from 8 hours to 6 hours, and then to 4 hours at 17th level.
- Sturdy Resilience: You treat any level of exhaustion you have as one level lower than it is.
Obsidian Body
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you can push your body to perform amazing feats. When you are attacked, make a saving throw or ability check, you can use your reaction and spend one hit die to perform one of the following options:
- Widen Stance: When you take damage from an attack you are aware of, you can roll the hit die you spent to reduce the damage by the rolled amount plus your Wisdom modifier.
- Single-Minded Focus: When you make an Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma saving throw, you can roll the hit die you spent and add the result to your roll.
- Contortion: When you make a Strength or Dexterity ability check, you can roll the hit die you spent and add the result to your roll.
You may choose to use this ability after you roll but before you know the outcome.
Obsidian Spirit
At 6th level, you gain the ability to replenish your hit die with greater efficiency. At the end of a short rest the character regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character's total number of them (minimum of one die). During a long rest the character recovers all lost Hit Dice.
Tempered Obsidian
At 11th level, the effects of your training are apparent for all to see; your body has reached a physical perfection that others could only dream of. You gain the following benefits:
- Any critical hit against you is treated as a normal hit.
- Any bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage you take is reduced by 3.
- Your unarmed attacks are considered to be made of adamantine for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
- Your unarmed attacks deal double damage to objects and constructs.
Obsidian Soul
At 17th level, you have mastered the Obsidian Soul. You are considered to always be under the effects of your Obsidian Body and may use the abilities granted by it without the expenditure of a hit die.
Your mind, body, and soul are one; you know exactly where and when to attack. Enemies no longer benefit from immunity or resistance to your unarmed strikes. When you hit an enemy that is under the effect of your Stunning Strike, you may spend a number of hit dice equal to your Wisdom modifier and add the results to your damage. After this attack, the enemy is no longer under the effect of your Stunning Strike and cannot be affected by it until the beginning of your next turn.
At 20th level, when you roll for initiative and have no ki points remaining, instead of gaining 4 ki points from your Perfect Self ability, you may spend a hit die and regain a number of ki points equal to the roll +4.
