Monk
Base Class: Monk

Across the world, there are few who can harness the dark spirits known as yokai. Only a select candidate within a monastery can be considered for this type of training and even fewer succeed at it. Those who practice the Way of the Yokai seek to harness spiritual energy wherever they find it. Their bodies and minds become a temple to dangerous forces, forever threatening to claw their way free. These yokai are subjugated by the monk's relentless training, both physical and mental. They are seekers of knowledge and truth, and ultimately protectors of the living. Once mastered, a monk of the Way of the Yokai can be a relentless enemy and staunch guardian.

Spiritual Attunement

Beginning when you take this tradition at 3rd level, you gain the ability to command minor spirits in the world around you. They can perform minor tricks and tasks at your behest.

You learn the Thaumaturgy and Minor Illusion cantrips.

At level 5 you learn the spell Speak with Dead and can cast it once per long rest, requiring no material components.

Accursed Touch

At 3rd level, your fists become conduits for the dark spirits within you. Upon striking an enemy, you can inflict a minor curse upon them through the will of the yokai.

Whenever you hit a creature with an unarmed attack you may choose to inflict a minor curse upon them by spending 1 Ki point. The curse lays dormant on that creature for 1 minute, or until you activate an effect on it, listed below. You may use your Reaction to activate one or more curses at a time.

  • The spirits curse the eyes of your foe, temporarily blinding them. The creature must succeed a Dexterity saving throw or be Blinded by ghostly entities until the end of your next turn.
  • The spirits manifest haunting faces around your foe. The creature must succeed a Charisma saving throw or have their speed reduced to zero until the start of your next turn.
  • The spirits tremble the fingers of your foe. The creature must succeed a Strength saving throw, or drop one item currently being held in its hands. If the item cannot fall into the space at its feet, it lands in an adjacent space at the DMs discretion.

When you inflict the curse, or activate it, there are no discernible effects that would show the creature you cursed them. The curse can be seen within the body of an afflicted individual with spells like Detect Magic as an Enchantment and is able to be removed with Dispel Magic, Remove Curse, or stronger effects.

Spectral Assault

Malevolent spirits lash out from within you at 6th level, and batter your opponents across the battlefield. When you use your Flurry of Blows against a creature you have cursed, you may consume the curse as part of the attack, whether or not the attacks hit.

If you do, the target takes an additional 1d6 Force damage and is pushed up to 10 feet away. This movement can provoke an opportunity attack.

The damage of Spectral Assault increases to 2d6 at 11th level, and 3d6 at 17th level.

Condemn for the Wicked

By 11th level your mastery of spirits has grown so precise that you can command them to deflect an assailant's blow.

When a creature that is cursed by Accursed Touch makes an attack roll, you may use your reaction to consume the curse and Condemn the attack. A Condemned attack is made at disadvantage, and the target of the attack roll has Resistance to all of that attack's damage.

Phantasmal Vortex

At 17th level you can unleash the horde of spirits from within you. You may spend 4 Ki points and use your bonus action to emit an aura of phantoms that circle around your body in a 30 foot sphere. The aura lasts for 1 minute and extends through total cover, or until you choose to end it on your turn as a bonus action.

While the aura persists, gain the following effects:

  • Curse of the Yokai: All hostile creatures that begin their turn inside the aura, or upon entering the aura, are cursed as if by the Accursed Touch feature.
  • Phantasmal Flurry: Your Flurry of Blows does not have a Ki cost to use, and deals either your regular unarmed strike damage or Force damage, your choice.
  • Grasping Hands: The area inside your aura is considered difficult terrain for all hostile creatures, including flying creatures.
