Base Class: Fighter
Fighters who adopt the Varangian Guard archetype are masters of agility, speed, and deadly grace. They use fluid, dance-like movements to overwhelm their foes, striking with precision and evading counterattacks with ease. The Varangian Guards excel at controlling the battlefield through sheer mobility, leaving enemies struggling to keep up with their relentless rhythm.
Dance of Blades
3rd level class feature
When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, your combat style becomes an elegant and deadly dance.
- Graceful Strikes: When you make a melee weapon attack using Dexterity, you can add your proficiency bonus to the damage roll. This applies only once per turn.
- Blade Dancer's Mobility: When you take the Attack action on your turn, your movement does not provoke opportunity attacks for the rest of that turn. Additionally, your movement speed increases by 10 feet while you are not wearing heavy armor.
Improved Two-Weapon Fighting
3rd Level class feature
If you took the two-weapon fighting style at level one you gain the following features
- On your turn when you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can make one additional attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand as part of the same action freeing up your bonus action. If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it. You can use this feature one per turn.
- You add your ability modifier to hit and damage to the attack actions but not the bonus action attack.
Whirling Step
7th level class feature
Your footwork allows you to maneuver around enemies with ease. As a bonus action, you can move up to half your speed without provoking opportunity attacks. If you pass within 5 feet of a creature during this movement, you can make a single melee weapon attack against that creature as part of the same bonus action.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended uses after a long rest.
Dual Flurry
7th Level class feature
Prerequisite two weapon fighting and extra attack.
- One weapon does not need to have the light property but cannot have the two-handed property.
- You can attack twice, instead of once, with the weapon that you’re holding in your other hand whenever you use two weapon fighting. IE: Two attacks with one weapon then two more attacks with your offhand weapon. You can use the attack action for your bonus action but you do not add your ability modifier to hit and damage. You can use this feature once per turn
Relentless Flow
10th level class feature
Your combat rhythm becomes almost impossible to disrupt. When you make a melee weapon attack using Dexterity and miss, you gain advantage on your next melee weapon attack before the end of your turn.
Additionally, when you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you take no damage on a success and half damage on a failure.
Evasion of the Varangian Guard
15th level class feature
You move like the wind, avoiding harm with incredible agility. As a reaction when you are targeted by an attack, you can impose disadvantage on the attack roll if you can see the attacker. If the attack misses, you can immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Dexterity modifier (minimum of once), regaining all expended uses after a long rest.
Master of the Dancing Blade
18th level class feature
You become the ultimate whirlwind of grace and lethality. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can target any number of creatures within 5 feet of you, making a separate attack roll for each target. Each attack deals an additional 1d8 damage if it hits.
Additionally, your movement speed increases by 10 feet (stacking with previous bonuses), and when you use your Whirling Step feature, you can make two melee attacks instead of one during the movement.

Posted Mar 7, 2025If you play this subclass, I'd like to hear what worked and what didn't. Also, I'm not a fan of the 15th level feature (couldn't think of anything better). Do you have any other ideas?

Posted Mar 4, 2025Thanks to the Dungeon Dudes this makes two-weapon fighting damage close to GWM damage and a lot more fun (I tweaked it a little).
