Base Class: Fighter
The Animal Tamer archetype embodies a friendship between the civilized races and the beasts of the wild. United in focus, Animal and Tamer fight the monsters that threaten civilization and the wilderness alike.
Bonus Proficiency
When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in Animal Handling if you don’t already have it. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses this skill.
Tamed Beast
At 3rd level, you gain a animal companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you. Choose a beast that is no larger than Medium and that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower. Add your proficiency bonus to the beast’s AC, attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throw abilities, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Its hit point maximum equals the hit point number in its stat block or four times your fighter level, whichever is higher. Like any creature, it can spend Hit Dice during a short rest to regain hit points.
In combat, the Tamed Beast shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take one of the actions in its stat block or the Dash, Disengage, Help, Hide, or Search action.
When your beast is within 5 feet, you can use your action to expend your Second Wind feature to heal your Tamed Beast half the normal hit points (rounded down). If the Tamed Beast is at 0 hit points, it regains 1 hit point instead.
If your animal companion dies, you can obtain a new companion by spending 8 hours bonding with a beast that isn’t hostile to you and that meets the requirements.
Improved Companionship
At 7th level, while your animal companion can see you, it has advantage on all saving throws. When choosing a beast to tame, it may now be a beast that is no larger than size Large and that has a challenge rating of 1/2 or lower.
Coordinated Attack
Beginning at 10th level, you and your animal companion form a more potent fighting team. When you use the Attack action on your turn, you can choose to forgo Extra Attacks for yourself to command your animal companion to make additional attacks. The target of your attack is the target of your Tamed Beast's attack. Your Tamed Beast may not use the Multiattack action with this special Attack action.
Bestial Offenses
At 18th level, the Tamed Beast's attacks now count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. Fighting alongside a companion has developed your skills as a Pact Leader; you gain the Pact Tactics trait. You have advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.
Bestial Defenses
At 15th level, your beast can use the dodge action as a reaction. While your Tamed Beast is taking the dodge action, it has resistance from attacks from targets it can see. Additionally, when your Trained Beast fails a saving throw it can benefit from your Indomitable Trait.
