Artificer
Base Class: Artificer

Some call them mad scientists, the Chaotic Inventor is obsessed with inventing the most powerful machines and devices ever known! ..... Safety is not much of a concern and only gets in the way of progress. Chaotic Inventors use an experimental power source to fuel their inventions. This power source is unstable and chaotic and can cause  surges of unexpected outcomes.

Tools of the trade

When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level you can select an additional tool proficiency of your choice.

Chaotic Inventor Spells

Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Alchemist Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Unstable Power Source

Starting when you choose this specialization at 3rd level, your inventions can unleash surges of chaotic magic due caused by their unstable magical power source. The more you use your magical inventions the more unstable the power source becomes.

You’re Unstable Power Surge DC is 1. Immediately after you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you must roll a d20. If you roll a 1, roll on the Sorcerer Wild Magic Surge table to create a random magical effect. If you do not roll a 1 then you do not roll on the Sorcerer Wild Magic Surge table but your Unstable Power Surge DC increases by 1. Therefore, next time you cast a spell if you roll a 1 or 2 you will have to roll on the Wild Magic Surge table but if you roll a 3 or higher then your Unstable Power Surge DC increases by 1 again. Your Unstable Power Surge DC will continue to increase to a maximum of 20. Once you roll under the Unstable Power Surge DC and a surge occurs the Unstable Power Surge DC resets back to 1 and the process starts over.

Chaotic Inventions

Starting at 3rd level, you can create single use inventions that can replicate one spell of a level you are able to cast, from any classes spell list. With your DM's discretion you must explain what the invention is, what effects of what spell it replicates, and how it works. The device takes one 1 hour per level of spell that it is able to replicate. The device uses your unstable power source and follows the Unstable Power Surge rules for this subclass. Once the device is used it cannot be used again until it recharges over a long rest. To determine the number of devices that you can have charged at one time you must note the level of spell that the device replicates. The sum of all the spells levels you are replicating with your devices cannot surpass your Intelligence modifier + your Proficiency Bonus.

Chaos Cannon

Starting when you choose this specialization at 3rd level, you create a magical hand-held cannon of tiny or small size. You can use the cannon as a spell casting focus. The cannon can cast 2 cantrips from the following list (acid spray, shocking grasp, firebolt, poison spray, light, gust, lightning lure, produce flame, thunderclap, dancing lights, frostbite, ray of frost, mind sliver, sapping sting). Use Intelligence as your spellcasting modifier. The cannon must be used as your spellcasting focus in order to cast these cantrips. During a long rest you can modify your cannon and change which cantrips it can cast from the list.

Additionally, the weapon can also cast the chaos bolt spell using one of your spell slots. The cannon must be used as your spellcasting focus in order to cast the spell. When casting chaos bolt in this way your Unstable Power Surge DC increases by 2.

Overdrive

At 5th level, you can overdrive your spells and cantrips to increase their effectiveness but also increase their instability. On your turn you can choose to increase your Unstable Power Surge DC to overdrive a spell in one of the following ways:

  • +1 to your Unstable Power Surge DC to increase your spell’s raw force. If you roll damage for the spell when you cast it, you can add your Intelligence modifier to one of the damage rolls.
  • +2 to your Unstable Power Surge DC can double the spell’s spell’s range or area of effect (if applicable).
  • +3 to your Unstable Power Surge DC will increase the spell’s potency. Increase the spell save DC by 1.

This increase to your Unstable Power Surge DC occurs after you case the spell but before you roll your d20 to see if there is a chaotic power surge.

Chaotic Adaptation

At 9th level, you have attained a greater mastery of spell preparation and the ability to adapt to chaotic situations. As a bonus action, you can choose to cast one spell from the list of spells for this class that you do not have prepared but you must roll for an Unstable Power Surge. You can’t use this ability again until you finish a short or long rest.

Controlled Chaos

At 15th level, anytime you roll on the Chaotic Power Surge table you can now roll twice and choose the result that you want to happen.
