Base Class: Monk
Monks of the Way of the Closed Fist are the primary rivals to the Way of the Open Hand. They focus on raw power, explosive bursts, and sheer endurance to overwhelm opponents. The combat style of the Closed Fist is the most aggressive and offensively focused of the monastic styles, utilizing techniques for a strong offense, on the philosophy that defense is unnecessary when your foes lie broken.
Body of Steel, Hammering Blows
Your body has been hardened by your training and past battles, to the point where for you withstanding an attack is as effective as avoiding being hit. At 3rd level when you become part of this tradition, you can use your Strength modifier in place of your Dexterity modifier for your Armor Class. You may still add your Wisdom modifier to your Armor Class while not wearing armor, as per the Unarmored Defense feature. Additionally, your martial arts die increases by one size. d4 > d6 > d8 > d10 > d12 and at 20th level it improves again to 2d6.
Forms of Strength
Taking inspiration from the mightiest creatures of the natural world, monks of the Closed Fist channel their Ki to make their strikes more potent. When you gain this feature at 6th level, you may select one form to specialize in. When you use you Flurry of Blows ability, you may spend 1 additional Ki point to add the effects of your chosen form to the additional strikes.
At level 11 you may learn a new form and choose which to use when activating this ability.
Form of the Bear
When using the Form of the Bear, Flurry of Blows attacks re-roll any die that shows max damage, adding it to the total. If both attacks hit, then you gain temporary hit points equal to half your monk level rounded up.
Form of the Dragon
When using the Form of the Dragon, Flurry of Blows attacks gain 5 ft reach and deal additional fire damage equal to your wisdom modifier. If both attacks strike the same target, they are affected by the Stunning Strike ability and have disadvantage on their saving throw against it, without spending any additional Ki.
Form of the Tiger
When using the Form of the Tiger, Flurry of Blows attacks are made with advantage, but enemies have advantage to hit you until the start of your next turn. Additionally, if both attacks hit against a single creature, that target must make a Dexterity saving throw against your Ki save DC or be knocked prone.
Form of the Wolf
When using the Form of the Wolf, Flurry of Blows attacks are critical hits on rolls of 19 or 20. If both attacks hit a single target, your allies gain advantage on attacks against that creature made before the start of your next turn.
Forged Body, Flowing Steel
Starting at 11th level, you gain resistance to bludgeoning damage as your body toughens. You also gain the ability to use your reaction to reduce damage from an incoming melee attack by 1d10 + your Strength or Dexterity modifier + half your monk level (rounded up). If this reduces the incoming damage to 0, then you may make a free unarmed strike against the attacker.
Bone Crusher
Starting at 17th level, you may attempt to break an enemy. When you hit with an unarmed strike you may spend 3 Ki points, and the target must make a Constitution saving throw against your Ki save DC, taking an additional 10d10 force damage on a successful save, or being reduced to 0 hit points on a failure.

Posted Mar 5, 2021Hey man super cool build. My only slight criticism is that this isn't REALLY Way of the Closed Fist. It's more like Way of the Primal Fury. Makes me think of Udyr from League of Legends. Check out my build, you'll see what I mean by the difference. Also it seems a lot like LeK's build, or maybe his is like yours?

Posted Dec 14, 2018Thanks for the feedback, I will workshop some ideas to balance Bone Crusher more acceptably. The idea was to strike a middle ground between the finisher abilities from Open Hand and Lasting Death.
Forged Body, Flowing Steel was meant to have limited uses (1 + WIS mod, min: 1), that will be fixed in the next iteration.
How would you suggest bringing Dragon and Bear forms more in line? I can see removing the disadvantaged save from Dragon form, but otherwise they seem to fit their roles... Bear for tenacity, Dragon for raw power, Tiger for ferocity, and Wolf for teamwork. (Future update may also add a few other forms, similar to Totem Barbarian options...)

Posted Dec 12, 2018I really love this idea. However, it seems a bit overtuned. Having a higher martial arts die is fine, but more outgoing damage on top of frequent reduced incoming damage (Forged Body, Flowing Steel) makes it so the class has no weaknesses at all. The forms are super cool, but should probably all be in line with the Tiger & Wolf Forms. Lastly, Bone Crusher is just plain better than the Open Hand version. I hope this gets some attention on this site.
