Base Class: Artificer

An Artificer that choses to become a Puppeteer of their own creations and others utilize a thread made from their own mana. The thread acts as an extension of the Artificer Puppeteer, and grow with their strength. Utilizing this Mystic Thread, the can take control of their own puppets, or bring others under their control and puppeteer them. Puppeteers that prefer to create their own puppets may utilize specialized Artificer Infusions to create perfect tools for whatever occasion, but the more detailed the puppet the harder it becomes to control multiples. For this reason, a Puppeteer that exerts control over individuals, the Mystic Thread can only be utilized to lock the individual target down and control their actions. As sentient creatures or constructs may fight against the thread, it takes extreme focus from the Puppeteer to maintain control. For the variable use of these individuals, they are often in enforcement positions such as high ranking guards.

Puppeteer Spells

 3rd-level Puppeteer feature

 You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Puppeteer Spells table. These spells count as Artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of Artificer spells you prepare.

Mystic Thread.

3rd-level Puppeteer feature

An unbreakable thread is created by the Puppeteer focusing their own energy into thin strands. It acts as an extension of the Puppeteer, allowing them to use the thread in various ways ranging from grappling to controlling objects and individuals. The thread extends from the Puppeteer's fingers, and are invisible by normal means.

Puppet Crafting

3rd-level Puppeteer feature

You gain proficiency with a choice of artisan’s tools, and can create special puppets depending on tools used. Such as using Thieves' Tools to create a puppet that specializes in picking locks, or Woodcarver's Tools to create a puppet with a bow or crossbow for ranged combat. When used with the Mystic Thread, the Puppeteer can utilize puppets as a bonus action with basic commands.

Starting when this Specialist is chosen, you can command up to 2 puppets at a time. If you Grapple an individual with the Mystic Thread, it lowers the number of puppets used by 1. Increase the number of puppets usable to [5th] 3, [9th] 4, and [15th] 5. 

Below are some very basic and arbitrary ideas for players that don't know what to make.

Basic puppet example list
Shield Puppet  Has a base AC of 10 + any armor or shield equipped to it.
Will allow others to use it as cover, allies using it as such are not obstructed as it will move accordingly.
 Becomes a shield for the Puppeteer or whatever the Puppeteer uses it to guard.
Uses a Cover action to shield an individual, preventing most incoming attacks. Acts as cover and can use a reaction to apply the puppet AC to the guarded individual.
Ranger Puppet  Utilizes the Puppeteers' Dex and Proficiency on a D20 roll to hit, damage type is based on weapon equipped and any arrow additions. Able to fire a number of times equal to the Puppeteer's, load action still required.
Melee Puppet  Can be equipped with a variety of weapons, utilizing the Puppeteers' Proficiency on a D20 roll to hit, damage type based on weapon equipped.  Able to perform an equal number of melee attacks as actions the Puppeteer has.
Utillity Puppet  Able to use basic tools that the Puppeteer is proficient with, the puppet can perform basic tool checks for the Puppeteer at a safe distance.  Basic example being using Thieves' Tools to pick a lock from a safe distance in case of traps.

Thread Channeling

5th-level Puppeteer feature

The Puppeteer has grown more attuned to the thread, allowing the channeling of spells through it. While a target is grappled using the Mystic Thread, any spells that are touch based hit and any spells that require a spell save are at disadvantage.

  • Spells that require a roll against AC travel down the thread to the target, guaranteeing the hit.
  • Spells that require a spell save are rolled at disadvantage by the grappled target.

Thread of the Puppeteer

9th-level Puppeteer feature

Growing even more attuned to the Mystic Thread, the Puppeteer is able to use it as a weapon akin to a whip.

When making a Grapple check with the Mystic Thread, add the Intelligence (Arcana) mod to the roll (D20+Str(Athletics)+Int(Arcana))

Thread Mastery

15th-level Puppeteer feature

Mastering the Mystic Thread, the Puppeteer can now use the threads to forcefully control any grappled individual as an improvised puppet. Forgoing the use of any crafted puppet, using an action to control a grappled enemy allows the Puppeteer to turn foes against each other or force the individual to harm itself. Targets can range from Tiny to Large.

Extends the range of the Mystic Thread to double the base range.
