Monk
Base Class: Monk

The Niko style was created by mixing the techniques of the Gaoh Style with the Kaiwan Style, focusing highly on adaptability and flexibility in combat.

The style is made up of four different katas, or forms, each of which must be fully mastered in order for the Niko Style to be complete. This style places a high focus on adaptability and applicability; many of the techniques are not set patterns, but rather basic principles which can be applied in multiple situations.

The Niko Style utilizes unique styles of training to maximize the user's physical conditioning. This includes underwater shadow-boxing (which combines anaerobic exercise with water resistance) to improve muscular and cardiovascular functions.

Four Kata's Novice

With novice knowledge of the Niko Style, you are able to access techniques that are beyond the normal limits of the human body. You can expend Ki Points to utilize these techniques as described.

  • Adamantine Kata: Indestructible. Through instantaneously clenching all of their muscles at the moment of impact; tensing and tightening of the muscles increases the solidity and density of the user's body, thus preventing the impact of outside attacks from inflicting much, if any, damage. By the user also picturing themselves as if they are rooted to the ground, the technique has the capability to withstand blows from opponents up to a certain weight limit. You can use a ki point to use this technique as a reaction to either give yourself advantage on skill checks against being pushed or knocked prone, or you can roll 1d6 to add to your AC against the singular incoming attack.
  • Flame Kata: Raging Fire. You quickly sidestep at the moment right before your opponent's attack, causing the opponent to think that their attack phased right through you. By spending a ki point, you may make a dexterity check against your opponent's attack roll as a reaction. Upon meeting or exceeding the incoming attack roll, you successfully dodge the attack.
  • Redirection Kata: Flowing Edge. A defensive technique that deflects an attack's trajectory by applying power to its side, it can even be used to deflect projectiles by calculating the angle of incidence of the projectile and creating an angle to deflect the projectile off of hard bone in order to change the projectile's trajectory. You may spend a ki point to deflect a melee attack or projectile attack against you that you can see. When you deflect an attack, you reduce the incoming damage by 1d10 + your dexterity modifier + your monk level.
  • Water Kata: Jellyfish Clutch. By spending a Ki Point, utilizing your action, you must dash a distance of no less than 10 feet to an enemy, upon meeting the enemy you make a Dexterity check to grapple them against their acrobatics/athletics check. Upon success, you grab the enemy by the neck in a headlock and throw them a distance of ten feet in the direction you dashed, dealing damage equal to 2 rolls of your martial arts die. The enemy is also knocked prone upon being thrown.

Possessing Spirit

Through the overclocking of one's heart, blood flow is increased which is then turned into speed and energy for attacks. This drastically alters one's speed in combat, as well as their appearance. The emergence of blood vessels gives the skin a deep red color, as well as veins being visibly bulging through the skin. The user also perpetually wears a twisted grin on their face during use of this form. The users erratic heartbeat is also audible within 15 feet of the user.

Functionally, this form works similar to Rage. As a bonus action, you may trigger the Possessing Spirit. You are granted resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage from non-magical weapons. You also gain a bonus of +2 damage to your Dexterity scaling damage modifier on your martial arts die. You also gain advantage on Acrobatics checks due to your severely increased speed. This form may be used once per long rest, and has major drawbacks to one's health upon use. This form lasts for 1 minute, or until canceled as a free action, or until the user loses consciousness. While the Possessing Spirit is active, the user cannot utilize any Niko Style techniques. The speed and severity of the adverse health effects due to the use of the Possessing Spirit is at the discretion of the DM.

Four Katas Adept

Through continuous intensive training, you have further mastered techniques of the Four Katas of the Niko Style. By spending Ki Points, you may utilize these techniques in addition to other techniques learned in previous mastery levels.

  • Adamantine Kata: Ironbreaker. A strike-enhancing technique that is delivered while tensing and tightening the muscles in the user's hands or feet. It causes attacks powerful enough to leave an impression of one's fist in their opponent's body. Whenever you make an unarmed attack, you may spend a Ki point before rolling your attack roll. If the strike lands, you may roll double your martial arts die for that attack.
  • Flame Kata: Raging Fire. A sprinting technique that is performed by digging you toes into the ground, allowing you to accelerate at unthinkable speeds. By spending a Ki Point as a bonus action, you may now dash at double efficiency, effectively doubling the distance you may dash in a turn.
  • Redirection Kata: Weeping Willow. This technique alters the trajectory of your opponent's attack by redirecting their flow of power. By spending a Ki Point, you may use your reaction to make a dexterity roll against an incoming melee attack that you can see. The creature attacking you must roll a Strength saving throw. If they fail the save, their attack misses entirely and the opponent is knocked prone.
  • Water Kata: Seagrass Hold. This technique relies on the ability to bring an opponent to the ground in a grapple, before using one's arms to choke them and one's legs to apply pressure to the opponents back. By using a Ki Point, you may take the Grapple action against an opponent. Upon success, both you and the opponent are knocked prone and the opponent is counted as restrained. Upon the opponents next turn, they may make a second Acrobatics/Athletics check against your strength check. If they fail, upon the start of your next turn they are knocked unconscious due to the blocking of blood flow to the brain.

Four Katas Expert

Through further grueling and intensive training, you have gained the ability to push your body to even greater heights through the use of yet more Niko Style Techniques.

  • Adamantine Kata: Ironbreaker Barrage. Through mastery of the Ironbreaker technique, you have gained the ability to utilize its effects on your Flurry of Blows. When you utilize Flurry of Blows, you may spend an additional Ki Point to use Ironbreaker Barrage. This allows you to apply Ironbreaker to both of your Flurry of Blows attacks.
  • Flame Kata: Flashfire. A style of movement that allows the user to flicker like a flame. This technique is able to confuse the enemy by making them see multiple copies of you. By spending a Ki point, you may use your bonus action to gain the effect of the Blur spell. Any creature attacking you has disadvantage on their attack roll against you. Should you be hit by an attack, you must make a Constitution saving throw to maintain your concentration on Flashfire. The DC is 10, or half of the damage dealt to you, whichever is higher. Upon success, you maintain Flashfire. Upon failure, Flashfire's effect cease.
  • Redirection Kata: Entanglement. While similar to Weeping Willow, this technique allows you to reflect the opponent's energy back into their body. By spending a Ki Point, you may use your reaction to make a Dexterity check against an incoming attack roll that you can see. Upon success, you deflect the attack and may roll 1 martial arts die of damage to be dealt to the enemy as force damage.
  • Water Kata: Bind of Pisces. By utilizing this grappling technique, you grab an opponents arm into an armbar, flipping upside down and trapping their head and neck behind your legs. By spending a Ki Point, you may take the grapple action against an enemy. Upon Success, the enemy is counted as restrained and you both occupy the same 5 foot space. The enemy also takes 1 martial arts die worth of bludgeoning damage. The opponent may make normal escape checks against your strength checks on each of their turns. For every one of your turns that you end still in the Bind of Pisces, you may deal 1 martial arts die worth of bludgeoning damage to the restrained target.

Four Katas Master

Through Utter Mastery of the Niko Style techniques and all Four Katas, you are able to exact devastating revenge on an opponent by fluidly melding the Katas together.

  • Ultimate Technique: Demon's Bane. By using all Four Katas together, you can execute a dangerous technique to deliver a devastating counter to an opponent. Redirection to change the direction of the attack's power, Water to allow the power to flow throughout the body and Flame to check positioning. Finally, Adamantine is used to deliver the diverted power back to the opponent while also adding your own power to the attack, drastically augmenting the damage inflicted. This technique is formless, allowing it to be used in nearly any situation. However, the risk is great, for a slight misstep in any of the Kata's will lead the energy of an attack to disperse into your own body. By spending 3 Ki Points, you may utilize your reaction against an incoming melee attack that you can see, and the attack must pass your AC in order to use Demon's Bane. You make a Dexterity check against a Creature's strength check, and upon success, you must roll an additional attack roll against the creature's AC. Upon success, the creature rolls damage for their attack, and their result is doubled and reflected upon the creature as you deliver an empowered counter to them. If you fail to hit the creature, the damage is instead dealt entirely to you at the original number the creature rolled. If your Dexterity Check against the Creature's Strength Check fails, you also sustain full damage.
