Maybe you hang out in back alleys or near bars, maybe you work for a more high class establishment. Wherever it is, you are a master with a deck of cards, delighting those around you and, almost inevitably, drawing them in for a seemingly reasonable bet only to succeed in parting another punter from their gold.
Why is it that you do this, what drew you to this craft? Is it a nefarious means to a morally upstanding end, or are you in it only for the money?
How does your class tie into this? Is it to defend yourself if the deception is discovered, or does some unseen arcane knowledge help you part fools from their money?
Why have you now chosen to travel? Were you caught in a scam and need to flee the authorities? Are you leaving that life behind with your haul, seeking solitude and peace? Or are you looking for that one BIG score that would allow you to retire? I mean, whoever heard of adventurers who DON'T find mountains of gold.......
- Skill Proficiencies: You gain proficiency in the Sleight of Hand and Deception skills from years of working in your craft. You can also choose an additional skill proficiency from Persuasion, Intimidation, Performance or Insight.
- Tool Proficiencies: You are proficient with the Playing Card Set and one other gaming set.
- Languages: You understand an additional language from your time working with all who have travelled through your city.
Years of your work have made you adept at pulling in a crowd, enticing passers by and unwitting guards alike into seeing what it is they can do to take your money..... You have advantage on any charisma based checks when utilising your deck of cards or other street gaming tools (as determined by your DM).
Whenever you enter a new settlement, you also know instinctively the best place to set up and make a bit of money. After doing so, you cannot set up in the same settlement for 3 days as word has gotten around about your tricks/skill with the cards, and people will be reluctant to bet against you. If your DM determines that a city is big enough, you may set up in a separate district as word does not travel as quickly in larger settlements. However, once half the districts in a city have been party to your displays, the 3 day exclusion applies across the whole city.

I struggle with suggested characteristics, and think there's SO many ways to play all characters, I feel like it could railroad people *too* much...
