Contract Killer - Baldur’S Gate Image

You earn a living by taking on contracts to kill certain targets. Unlike the common assassin or brutish cutthroat, contract killers carry themselves with the attitude of that skilled trades' person. An assassin only cares about targets that have status and scoff at the idea of taking out people without that status. A cutthroat is no more than a violent brute with no sense of tack or respect. However, a contract killer takes on any contract with complete respect and carries themselves as the ultimate professional.

In Baldur's Gate, there's a network that allows clients to place their contracts with anonymity for the contract killer to then pick up. As a rule of thumb, these contracts do not have time constraints and half the total payment is provided upfront. Once the contract is completed with the required proof specified, the killer then gets the remaining half of the payment. Should a contract killer not hold up their end of the terms, a hit is automatically placed on them. If a client doesn't hold up their end of the contract, then the killer that took on the job has the right to kill or retaliate against that client.

Skill Proficiencies: Stealth, Perception
Tool Proficiencies: Disguise kit, forgery kit
Equipment: A crowbar, a Clothes, Common, a symbol or calling card tied your modus operandi, and a pouch containing 15 gp

Modus Operandi

Contract killers all have their own way of carrying out how they handle a contract. Roll or choose from the provided table if you want to determine your character's modus operandi.

d8 Modus Operandi
1 You hide thee face-up coins of your choice somewhere close to where you killed your mark.
2 Regardless of how the mark was killed, you leave a simple dagger lodged in their chests.
3 You carve a simple rune or symbol somewhere on the mark.
4 After every successful contract you permanently mark your body in some way.
5 Regardless of the mark was killed, you leave a noose around the target's neck.
6 After completing every contract, you donate a portion of the earning from the contract to some form of charity.
7 After killing a mark, you perform a sacred rite over them based on your faith.
8 Once a contract is complete, you blow your earnings on whatever vices you can get your hands on.

Feature: Just Another Face

You have an uncanny ability to blend in and look as though you belong, providing you've spent at least 1 hour observing the mannerisms of a person or coming and going of a crowd. This feature makes it harder for people to recall ever seeing your face in the crowd and decreases the likelihood of being noticed in a crowd.

Baldur’s Gate Feature: Contract Network

In Baldur’s Gate, you have access to a hidden network that posts new contracts for you to take on. The complexity of these contracts is up to you and the dungeon master to determine, and can also be used to find out what types of contracts other contract killers have recently taken on.

Suggested Characteristics

Contract killers are professionals, this professionalism is (to them) what separates them from a common murderer or thug. Contract killers see taking a life as a business transaction, and most have a strict set of self-imposed rules or tenants they adhere to. While the work of a contract killer operates outside the standard laws of the land, they tend to lean towards Lawful or Neutral alignments and are rarely Good aligned.
