Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monks of the Way of True Sight believe that the truth of the world can only be experienced through embracing one's Ki to the exclusion of other senses.  To this end, those who follow the Way of True Sight undergo a life-altering ritual known as The Blinding which makes them permanently blind but unlocks the ability to perceive their surroundings using an extra-sensory perception granted by mastery of their Ki.

The Blinding affects each monk differently, but it results in the loss of the use of the eyes they were born with.   Some monks' eyes glaze over and become milky white.  Some followers' eyes heal over completely leaving blank flesh where once were eyes with which they used to perceive the world.  On rare occasions, the monk's eyes are literally burned from their skulls with a blinding white light.  Regardless of how The Blinding affects those who undergo its rigorous trials, the voluntary sacrifice of their flawed vision grants the monk a new form of perception they refer to as Ki Sense which grows in power as they unlock its capabilities.

Ki Sense

Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you gain Ki Sense.  Ki Sense is a replacement of your original senses and gradually becomes more powerful over time as you learn to trust in these new senses.

When you learn Ki Sense at level 3, you gain blindsight with a range of 60ft.  This is a passive ability that replaces your normal sight and you can perceive things in perfect clarity around you as if you had sight.  Any regular sight, dark vision or other sight-based senses gained from race or other sources are replaced by this feature.  With this blindsight, you:

  • Can see in normal or magical darkness up to the range of your Ki Sight and do not suffer disadvantage when in darkness as it is identical to being in light from your perspective.
  • You have advantage on checks made to resist the frightened condition because you can perceive the source of the fear but not actually see it.
  • You are immune to the blinded condition from any source, including spells.
  • You have disadvantage on any attacks you make that go further than your Ki Sight, such as firing a ranged weapon beyond the limits of your Ki Sight for example.
  • You can no longer perceive colours, your Ki Sight is black and white with gradients of grey.

As a bonus action, you can spend a Ki point to increase the range of your Ki Sight by an additional 30ft.  This increased range lasts for a number of minutes equal to your proficiency bonus, and then reverts back to its starting range.  You may use this extended Ki Sight a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus.

Sightless Perception

At 3rd level when you select this tradition,  you gain proficiency in the Perception skill.

If you were already proficient in Perception when you gain this feature, you gain Expertise with it instead.

Situational Awareness

At 6th level, you become acutely aware of the immediate area around you, and your place within it.

So long as you are conscious and not incapacitated, you gain a bonus to your Initiative check equal to your Wisdom Modifier.

Reactive Parry

Starting at 6th level, you can use your reaction to deflect or block incoming blows when you are hit by a melee or natural weapon attack. When you do so, the damage you take from the attack is reduced by 1d10 + your Dexterity modifier + your monk level.

If you reduce the damage to 0, you can catch the weapon or limb if you have at least one hand free. If you catch the weapon or limb in this way, you can make a reactive melee attack using the same weapon or limb as part of the same reaction. You make this attack with proficiency, regardless of your weapon proficiencies, and the weapon or limb counts as a monk weapon for purposes of the attack. This attack does the listed damage of the weapon or natural attack, without any ability score modifier.

Unlike Deflect Missiles, you do not expend Ki to use this feature.

Ki Shield

At 6th level, you learn how to protect yourself using a materialisation of Ki energy.
As a reaction, when you are hit by an attack (including a spell), you can use 2 ki points to instantly cover your body in a force-field of materialised ki  Until the start of your next turn, you have a +4 bonus to AC, including against the triggering attack.

You can use this feature a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus.

Tremorsense

Beginning at 11th level, you gain Tremorsense when using Ki Sense.  You 'see' and feel vibrations on the ground and surfaces attached to it that allow you to sense the presence of creatures in contact with the same ground or substance as you.  It does not allow you to detect flying or incorporeal creatures and is identical to the ability of the same name in the Monster Rules.
Combined with the Blindsight included as part of your Ki Sense feature, the two sensory perceptions intermingle to create something akin to echolocation that converts vibrations and sounds into shapes and forms you can perceive.
The Tremorsense included in your Ki Sense shares the same range of 60ft.  You may still use a bonus action and spend a ki point to increase the range by a further 30ft in a manner identical to the method included in the Ki Sense feature description.

Sense Life

Once you reach 11th level you have learned how to use your Ki Sense to perceive the lifeforce of living creatures.

As an action, you expend a ki point and shift your perception to perceive the beating hearts of any living creatures within range of your Ki Sense.  These appear as auras of the beating heart and some of the veins attached to it, and you can see these auras through cover or any other form of obfuscation.  While this does not present any immediate advantages to attacking these creatures, living creatures with beating hearts cannot hide from your perception while within range of your Ki Sense.  You are considered to be able to see them for the purposes of various attacks or features.

Each ki point you spend maintains Sense Life for 1 minute.

Non-living creatures, undead, constructs or creatures without a functioning heart do not have their auras revealed by this feature.

True Sight

At 17th level, you gain True Seeing when using your Ki Sense feature.  You now perceive the world as if you had the 6th level divination spell True Seeing cast on you permanently, with the added advantage that it cannot be affected by the Dispel Magic spell.  Your True Seeing shares the range of 60ft as it is part of your Ki Sense feature, and just like the spell you can see into the Ethereal plane.   In addition, any illusionary magic or effects that rely on sight are instantly seen through.

As a bonus action, you can spend 5 ki points and touch a willing creature, granting them True Seeing as per the spell, for 1 hour.  This is a temporary extension of your Ki Sense and the gifted True Seeing cannot be removed with Dispel Magic.

You can share your True Seeing a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus, and cannot effect the same person more than once per day.
