Base Class: Monk
Monks of the the Merciful Soul learn to manipulate the life force of others to bring aid to those in need. Many act as wandering physicians to the poor and hurt. However, this does not mean they are weak, or unwilling to fight if necessary. The same commitment to merciful action that powers their incredible healing powers can also call forth necrotic damage on their foes.
Merciful Souls might be humble members of a religious order, administering to those in greatest need, or they may choose to fight the darker forces of the world. Either way, Merciful Soul monks have seen beyond the veil to what lies beyond, and that has grounded them in the earthly realities of those around them.
The walkers of this way generally disdain wealth and opulence. While they enjoy the daily pleasures of life--good food, good drink, boon companions--they know that no amount of material wealth will spare any of us from the finality of the grave.
Implements of Mercy
3rd-level Way of the Merciful Soul feature
You gain proficiency in the Insight or Medicine skill (your choice), and you gain proficiency with the herbalism kit and the poisoner’s kit.
Hands of Healing
3rd-level Way of the Merciful Soul feature
Your mystical touch can mend wounds. As an action, you can spend 1 ki point to touch a creature and restore a number of hit points equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die + your Wisdom modifier.
When you use your Flurry of Blows, you can replace one of the unarmed strikes with a use of this feature without spending its ki cost.
Hands of Harm
3rd-level Way of the Merciful Soul feature
You use your ki to inflict wounds. When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you can spend 1 ki point to deal extra necrotic damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die. If the creature is incapacitated or poisoned, the creature takes necrotic damage equal to three rolls of your Martial Arts die instead. You can use this feature only once on each of your turns.
Aura of Purity
6th-level Way of the Merciful Soul feature
As a bonus action, you spend 1 ki point to turn your ki into an aura of shining purity. The aura extends 5 feet from you in every direction, but not through total cover. It lasts for 1 minute, until you’re incapacitated, or you dismiss it (no action required). While your aura is active, ranged attacks have disadvantage against you. Any other creature that starts its turn in the aura must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become blinded until the end of your next turn. While the aura is active, you may take your move or turn action to touch another creature who is poisoned, giving them a Constituion saving throw (+ your Wisdom modifier) to be cured.
Healing Technique
11th level Way of the Merciful Soul feature
Your skill in manipulating your ki to heal increases. As a bonus action, you can choose to spend 1-5 ki points to restore a number of hit points equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die + your Wisdom modifier, per ki point expended. For each ki point expended, this healing technique can also end one disease or a condition from the following list affecting the target: blinded, deafened, paralyzed, or poisoned.
Held in the Balance
17th level Way of the Merciful Soul feature
Your mystical touch can give or take life. As an action, you call upon your innermost reserves, expending your remaining ki point to touch a creature and either heal or harm them. If you heal, the creature regains hit points equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die + your Wisdom modifier (per monk level), including up to one full hit die of temporary HP for the healed creature. Should you harm, a successful touch attack forces the creature to make a Will save or take an equal amount of necrotic damage (save for half damage). If the creature is taken to 0 HP or lower, it instantly dies. This ability may be used only once per long rest for or against any given creature.
