Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monks of the Way of the Resonance are taught to strike like the beat of a drum. One powerful strike creates a shockwave that lingers on their opponents. Resonance monks tend to search for the rhythm in everything. From the roar of thunder, to the beat of their heart, all of life has its own pulsing beat. Resonance monks believe that it is only in maintaining that beat that life will endure. These monks are not typically performers though as keeping a steady beat is more of a way of meditation rather than expression.

Bonus Proficiencies

You gain proficiency in the drum musical instrument if you don't already have it. Your martial arts technique mixes combat training with repetition, like beating on a drum.

Sonic Wave

3rd level Way of the resonance feature

Your study of sound allows you to deafen nearby foes with a mighty slam that can be heard up to 100ft away. When you take the attack action, you can replace one of your attacks to spend 1 Ki point and create a shockwave. Each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a constitution saving throw. A creature takes 2 rolls of your martial arts die thunder damage and is deafened for 1 minute on a failed save. They take half as much damage on a successful save and are not deafened. This ability can only be used once per turn.

Using Sonic Wave enters you into the Rhythmic Form if you aren’t already in it.

Rhythmic Form

3rd level Way of the Resonance feature

Your mastery of your Ki allows you to feel the vibration of everything around you. As a bonus action, you can spend 1 ki point to enter a powerful stance that enhances your abilities and increases your focus on the sound of battle. For 1 minute, the world ripples around you as waves of sound become visible to all who are within 10 feet of you. You determine the appearance of the sound. Your Rhythmic Form ends early if you become deafened, incapacitated or if you die. While in your Rhythmic Form you gain the following benefits:

  • The damage of your unarmed strikes changes to thunder damage.
  • When you use your Flurry of Blows, you can replace one of the unarmed strikes with a use of the Sonic Wave feature without spending an additional ki point.
  • All unarmed attacks against deafened opponents deal an additional martial arts die of thunder damage. Deafened opponents can truly feel the power of your rhythm.

Seismic Balance

6th level way of resonance feature

Your ability to feel the movements of the world around you has continued to grow stronger. While in Rhythmic Form, you move normal speed through rough terrain and cannot be knocked prone.

Thunder Shield

11th level way of the resonance monk

When an attack beats the armor class of someone within 10 ft. of you including yourself, you can use your reaction to spend 1 ki to create a shield of sound giving the benefits of the shield spell to them potentially changing that hit into a miss. This ability enters you into Rhythmic Form if you’re not already in it.

Booming Quake

17th level way of the resonance monk

You gain the ability to create even more powerful shockwaves with your mighty strikes. As an action, you can spend 3 ki points to strike the ground creating a thunderous burst of sound energy that ripples outward from you. Each creature you choose within 30 feet of you must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or take 10d6 thunder damage, be knocked prone and be deafened. A creature that succeeds on its saving throw takes half as much damage and isn’t knocked prone or deafened. This ability enters you into Rhythmic Form if you’re not already in it.
