I have added a Cart (200lbs) to my inventory, along with 2 mules. It appears to have triggered an encumbrance rule, even though I have turned encumbrance off - my Speed has dropped from 30ft to 5ft and it immediately comes back up to 30ft.
Just wanted to reply here because this is still an issue. There should be a mechanic, like "wield" and "wear" to "store" items in your cart, and it should be pretty obvious that 99% of the time, people aren't trying to carry a mule. Perhaps a "harness" option to indicate it is linked to the cart?
Good to hear! Just for your awareness, our current solution is to just manually override the weight of the cart and anything we put in it. Isn't the cleanest, but it works for now.
It's been 5 months since this was last brought up. Any progress here? I had hoped the new creatures tab might address this, but you can't equip creatures or anything like that :(

I personally wouldn't expect anything for inventory management changes in 2018.
Suggestion: specify location of equipment by situation: carried during combat, carried during exploration, carried during travel, loaded on beast of burden, stored at home...
Switch between modes combat, exploration, travel.
Encumberance applyied in combat due to stuff I have in my backpack or at home is not that great... or is there an possibility of belongings management I overlooked?
Hoping for some changes here in 2020. I'm guessing we're not like to see this happen at this rate.
I understand encumbrance features on the character sheet shouldn't be expected as a priority item; it would be nice to help when managing inventory so I know at a glance what I'm carrying and what the donkey and cart have, especially for when I'm separated from them in an adventure.
I'm surprised that a cart adds to character encumbrance at all but there it is. Nice that the cart is also a container. Would be nice if the cart and anything in it were not added to the character's weight carried.
Funny thing is that Riding horses also count as storage and they do not add to the encumbrance by just equipping them (marking the check box)
I think there should be a parameter in the item DB that mark which storage items carrying capacity should be counted as the character carrying capacity. Basically the same behavior as the bag of holding.
Bag of holding ads 15lb to the character's carrying capacity, but has a 500lb limit that is not added to the character's capacity.
Is not that crazy. After all, the character is not carrying the cart on his back.
Equipping a riding horse does add the items it carries to your encumbrance. The only reason why a plain horse doesn't add to your carry weight is because horses aren't given a specific weight in the rules, while carts are (for the purposes of knowing how much pulling capacity a creature needs to successfully pull the cart.)
If you customize the horse to weigh, say, 200 lbs, then you'll notice the difference.
In either case, don't equip a container unless you're actually carrying it. Part of the point of having Containers now is that we can put our stuff inside a Backpack, and Unequip it to represent dropping the backpack. That makes all the contained items and the pack no longer count against your carry weight.

I'm having the same issue. I would also think that it deserves to have it's own equipment list separate from the character.

There are several improvements planned to the whole belongings/equipment system, now that the new character sheets are in place.
I know this is a bit of a pain for now, but the team will be working through and making the character sheet even better. :)

Any developments here since its 2019?

2021 maybe?
Like to see if you put a horse in your inventory your encumberance gets higher as the horse is carrying or something.
Bump.

It has been 5 years 2 months 28 days and still the carts/Carriages and such cause encumbrance when marked as active (or equipped?)
So I guess
A) Encumbrance mechanics is S**t
B) Vehicle mechanics is S**t
So what will it be?
