I've noticed that when you choose to manually enter HP while making a new character, when you choose a class the HP is a random number that can excede even your class' max Hit Die roll. I chose a Blood Hunter (I had not chosen a race, nor entered any Ability Scores yet) and the HP was 12. When I looked in the Manage HP section, it had the HP Rolled as 12, so there were no modifiers affecting it. I changed to a Barbarian, and got a 6. I then dismissed the class and retook it, and got a 1. I took a Cleric and got a 5.
I've also noticed that if you increase in level, and then regress back to level 1 in the class, the HP returns to the Max Hit Die roll, as it's supposed to.
Hope this helps, thanks!
