if you ask me why not both for a Artificer: Artillerist Arcane Firearm pumps in a extra d8 to spell's damage rolls how ever if the "thing" you firing it as resilient to magic or down right dos not work then having a extra crossbow of any kind on hand might save ya or something creative.
like for example you use Magical Tinkering on a barb bolt so it sheds bright light in a 5-foot radius witch you fire it out of your crossbow at something in the dark and if it hits and sticks grats now you and your party can now track it by that glowing bolt until it remove it.
I understand that it applies to all spells. When considering the adventuring day and the limited number of slots Artificer has, I would submit that when attacking it will most frequently be applied to cantrips. This is what I mean when I say they are reliant on cantrips because Arcane Firearm dis-incentivizes other ranged damage options for Artillerist.
The only reason they'll be using cantrips instead of other spells is spell availability. Everything the arcane firearm does for cantrips, it does (often better) for leveled spells.
Artillerist is built to be, basically, the "blaster spellcaster" version of artificer. If "they" had wanted it to be a ranged-weapon artificer (kinda stepping on the battlesmith's toes, there), they would have given artillerist a way to substitute Int for Dex when using ranged weapons.
This is dead on. You would have to really invest in Dex for this homebrew to work.
On another branch of the same tree, my artillerist just hit level 8, and I made a polite request to have the sharpshooter feat apply to the Arcane Firearm.
Sadly, the DM did not agree with my request.

I’m getting ready to play an artificer, who has a revolver and I took the sharpshooter feat, which applies to all ranged weapons, and it seems great.
