I'm playing an Artificer for the first time and my DM hasn't had one in their party before either so both of us are running into some confusion around this specific infusion. In the introduction to the infusions section it says you can "replace one of the artificer infusions you learned with a new one" on each level-up after gaining the ability, and that if you ditch one infusion for another the effects of that infusion end. Does that hold true for the magic items created using the replicate magic item infusion? Like if I took replicate magic item for a bag of holding at level 3 and then replace that with sending stones at level 4, would the bag of holding just revert back to a normal bag I'd have the sending stones instead?
There's no language I can find in the replicate magic item infusion description to suggest that the items that it creates function differently than other versions of the same but at the same time that might have been implied in the general rules for infusions, so I figured I'd check just to make sure that my DM and I haven't missed something.
The Bag of Holding would revert to an ordinary bag.
"The infusion also vanishes if you give up your knowledge of the infusion for another one."
You can see Replicate Magic Item as a placeholder for Bag of Holding. So basically if infusing a bag to turn it into a Bag of Holding would be a normal Artificer Infusion, the Bag would turn into a bag once you die (after INT days of your death) or once you "give up our knowledge of the infusion".

Think of it not as you creating a bag of holding, but your artificer using technology to replicate the effects of a Bag of Holding. There's some kind of device in there, whether it's a little portal generator or a chemical spray or something that causes your bag to function as a Bag of Holding. Without your Artificer maintaining that device it just becomes a regular bag.

or if your Artificer takes that device out to make a different device that mimics a different magical item such as boots of speed, it stops working as well. Which is essentially what switching infusions is doing.
not maintaining it because of something like death... shuts down after a bit...
Take it out and repurpose it into something else. shuts down immediately and the base item you used is just the base item again.
I am new to Artificer, but intrigued by the potential. I'm borderline overwhelmed by what feels like a high level of complexity. My main goal in writing here is to to get a handle on "Replicate Magic Item". I've read a lot (12+ hours) and have seen many conflicting opinions. There are the things I think I know... and things I've read that I believe can't be right (like being able to make a bag of holding for everyone in my party). Another said the number of 'Items Infused' was the total amount of each Infusion (like 2 Infused Items meant I could make 2 Bags of Holding). Those don't seem right, but I think the following are pretty accurate.
* Most all Infusions you can only learn once, but you can 'relearn' the Replicate Magic Item when you level. I read that there was another way to 'relearn' Replicate Magic Item... but don't remember right now.
* I've read that you can have a total number of active infusions equal to the "Infused Items column" in the Artificer leveling chart (between 2-6 depending on level).
* Apparently Magical Tinkering is not an infusion and is governed by different rules which I think I understand.
* Casting Spells is its own thing too. You get some for 'free' and others you choose.
Here is a Theoretical Infusion Build @ 2nd Level: I use 'Replicate Magical Item' and create a Bag of Holding. I choose the other 3 Infusion slots for Enhanced Defense, Homunculus and Repeating Shot. So I create a Homunculus. Now... does this mean I can't do anymore "Replicate Magical Item" (because I have 2 active Infusions and the chart says I can't have more than 2 Infused Items)?
Am I thinking correctly? Does this, essentially, mean that Enhanced Defense and Repeating Shot are worthless until I get more Infused Item slots?
Appreciate your input (with sources). Have a great day!

You're correct that most Infusions can only be taken once, with the exception of Replicate Magic Item, which can be taken multiple times. There's no other way to learn more infusions than is listed for your current Artificer level on the Artificer Table.

Right. Also, if you wanted the ability to Infuse two Bags of Holding or a Bag of Holding and any other magic item, you'd need to use multiple Infusions Known slots. You need to choose a specific magic item when you learn the Infusion and can't change it until you gain a level of Artificer.
Am I thinking correctly? Does this, essentially, mean that Enhanced Defense and Repeating Shot are worthless until I get more Infused Item slots?
They're not useless because you can choose which infusions you want active each time you take a long rest. So if you decide that your (or another party member) needs more AC or a magic bow/crossbow, you can trade one of your active Infusions out for Enhanced Defense or Repeating Shot.
Hope that helps.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
One disclaimer: I think RAI is that you can take Replication Magic Item as many times as you can, but it must be a different item each time. That is not RAW, though, but some DMs may enforce that.
For what it's worth, dndbeyond itself enforces it.

The exact wording of Replicate Magic Item is "Using this infusion, you replicate a particular magic item. You can learn this infusion multiple times; each time you do so, choose a magic item that you can make with it, picking from the Replicable Items tables."
That is pretty clear that each time you take RMI you have to chose a specific item.

I agree with you; I don't think one artificer can learn the same infusion twice / infuse two bags of holding. Dndbeyond's code agrees, too. But rules lawyers want loopholes, and the wording probably isn't as explicit as it should be. (The class is in a similar place in regards to using infusions to make tattoos.)
Related to Replicate magic item confusion. I’m playing an artificer for the first time, and when I read the list of items I can replicate at level 10, I see Quiver of Elhona. Cool. But when I go to select that particular item on the drop down menu, it’s nowhere to be found. Any help is appreciated. This seemed like the best post to ask this on.
Yeah I scrolled all the way down to the level 10 options, never saw it. I checked both the mobile app, and the web version on my iPhone. I haven’t checked it on a normal computer yet though.
I think it's pretty clear RAI that you have to pick different items for RMI.
I know that WotC has some wacky rules and aren't always clear on things they mean, but they can't be that incompetent to intend to let a level 2 character build a Bag of Holding bomb every long rest.

Did you scroll all the way down? The choices are organized by level so the Quiver will be down at the bottom with the rest of the Level 10 options.
