The newest level 5 I made (the god of death is on a 1st name basis with me now) is a Tortle Artificer 3/Forge Cleric 1/Fighter 1. I went Artillerist since I didnt look at the battlesmith option. But with those classes, I have out of shell an AC22 or AC24 if I hide. So place my cannon and hide :)
Tortle have a natural armor racial ability that gives them a base 17 AC, Artificer infusion for +1 AC on Shield (18 AC), Shield equipped +2 AC (20 AC), Defense Fighting Style +1 AC (21 AC), Forge Cleric Blessing +1 AC (22 AC). For a grand total of 22 AC, then the Tortle racial allows them to withdraw for +4 AC to get up to 26 AC, BUT you are prone and unable to move.
It's plausible that many DMs could be convinced that the 'Defense' fighting style could be learned by a tortle making use of their natural armor. Since their natural armor is armor and not just thickened skin or a psionic barrier. One would be hard-pressed to really classify a tortle's shell as not being 'armor' of one sort or another. Strictly RAW no, that doesn't work, but it's the sort of thing where the player may be justified in looking at their DM and going "really, guy?"
"Due to your shell and the shape of your body, you are ill-suited to wearing armor. Your shell provides ample protection, however; it gives you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield’s bonus as normal."
Please note the bold. It states you can technically wear any armor, but your not going to gain any AC from it. But since you are wearing it, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get the bump from Artificer to the armor, the +1 from forge cleric and the +1 from defense, so with the shield it should be AC22.
Now the only reason I could see its not working is RAI is in effect vs RAW.
A particularly anal-retentive Adventurer's League DM could easily call each of those things "benefits from wearing armor". I'd be of the opinion that said DM is an anal-retentive dongschnauser, but RAW tends to produce those. Again, I would allow Defense fighting style for a tortle, and if someone wanted to do a tortle Forge cleric I'd try and find a way to let them use their Blessing of the Forge.
I'd be a little less inclined to let someone stack all these things together without some good narrative backing, but any two individual pieces are fine.
Pretty sure the answer to this is resolved in the Sage's Advice Compendium and it does not favour the idea that the Tortle can benefit from pretty much any of those bonuses IIRC.
Lolno. Any DM that allows yuan-ti PCs in their campaign without reservation deserves what she gets. Level 1 permanent always-on magic resistance for PCs is horse shit. Poison immunity is a mid-level class feature, not a level one freebie.
If your DM is not aware of how horseshit yuan-ti are, then yes. They make worthwhile artificers, though I'd honestly argue that they're not amazing ones. Their innate casting doesn't benefit from any of the artificer's stuff, which is a little sad.'Free' Poison Spray that could benefit from Savant or Firearm might help those subclasses. Their bullshit overpowered class features are just kinda there. Bullshit and overpowered, but no more so for artificers than anyone else.
Yeah, by saying they would be great artificers, I meant flavor and how broken the race is.
I agree, Poison Immunity, Magic Resistance, Free Spells, all at level 1, broken, all of these can be accomplished by magic items. You get 3 rare/very rare attunement magic items at level one, built into your race, without any attunement needed, along with an Intelligence and Charisma boost, which makes you great at any class that uses Intelligence or Charisma; Warlock, Sorcerer, Wizard, Artificer, Paladin, Bard (Yuan-ti bard?).
Broken, but extremely useful, if your DM allows it.

Oh good, I didn't have to say it.
Anyways, wasting a stat buff on Cha just means you're not as tanky as well which does not bode well when trying to be a Battlesmith or otherwise.
Rock Gnome/Hobgoblin, now there's a stat combo you can sink your teeth into.
Like, the gnome, debatebly the most magically and spell inclined of the core races, has, as it's most powerful ability (like halfling Lucky, or hill dwarve's extra hp), advantage on all mental saving throws against magic. And pretty much no other features of power (that are not heavily situational). This is not only much more powerfui, but comes in addition to a full scale innate spellcasting (forest gnome gets one cantrip. one), but an immunity to a fairly common (or at least, not uncommon) damage type. WTF WOTC.
They do say in the Monstrous Races section of Volo's that not all the races are balanced, and the DM can choose to not have them in the game.
But why go through the work of making a race, if you're not going to balance it, and even encourage DMs to not allow it.
They will do this with the psion too, if they ever make it, it will probably be broken, because they're too lazy to balance it, and will discourage people from even playing it.
Back to the topic, sorry if I derailed my own thread a bit, but Hobgoblins seem to be great artillerists.

My daughter plays a Yuan-ti Warlock in our home campaign, as the DM I am aware she is immune to poison and resistant to magic, blades and fire mess her up though.

My question...do you carry the cannon on your back?

Need to add that you can't apply the Forge Cleric Blessing to a Tortle's natural armor since it can only be used on a suit or armor or a weapon. So youre max AC would be 21 (25 withdrawn). Link to relevant tweet:

Hot take:
If artificer was in the PHB, rock gnome would have gotten a free Replicate Magic Item instead of Tinker.

Okay, back to topic.
Yuan-Ti are broken, and would be great artificers. Now I want to play a Pureblood Battle Smith with a snake shaped steel defender.

Yuan Ti is stupid.
innate spellcasting is good
Poison immunity is worth way more budget than it is given, and even then should probably be reduced to resistance
Magic Resistance is ******* stupid as shit. This is a level 14 wizard ability (abjuration) being given at base on a race.

A DM should be able to out game these problems.
