So been buildding and toying with one for a while-Armourer I mean.
Other than multiclassing into Warlock, or being a Mark of Warding Dwarf, is there any way to get Armour of Agathys on the class list? It feels like its perfect for the class. Temp HP buffer for an hour, as well as auto damage back.
I thought that Armour of Agathys was on the sorcerer list.. but doesn't seem to be now. I thought it was; so I was going to use the Aberrant Dragonmark--Version one from Wayfinders Guide to Eberron. Which I think is the version that was far less confusing and far mroe flavorful. "You can increase the power of your aberrant spells at the risk of your own vitality. When you cast a spell with your aberrant mark, you can use one of your Hit Dice to increase the spell’s level by 1. Immediately after you cast the spell, roll the Hit Die. You take damage equal to the number rolled." since I found it amazing the idea I could pay hit die to increase the level of it. Though I totally wish you could spend more of them haha. (something like "up to half") Sure it was only 1/long rest, but it its pretty neat.. Plus the cantrip would likely be Chill Touch. I like that it can shut down healing; and it could be neat flavor wise. But plenty of utility ones too.
but its not on the sorcy list that I see, so I must be misremembering...
So question remains. Any way to do this? Currently the only way I can think of is the Spell Tattoo Infusion. Which gives you a 1/day use of it. But thats a pretty high cost for that 5HP. I'd like some way to be able to use my slots on it. Even if not a ton of them.
Its not like its super useful... but its pretty neat. and useful for a fair long while; though your slots probably don't keep up with the need perhaps.
Its only listed on the Warlock spell list so without diving into multi-classing I don't think there's much you can do. 5e has a lot less than some previous editions that allows you to acquire spells from a different class outside of things you get from specific divine domains. Pretty much the only way I can think of making it work is the "magic initiate" feat. Paladins get it at level 3 along with their class features if you do Oath of Conquest, which at least gives you three level 1 spell slots to use for it.
You can use Magic Initiate as Unagiman says, but the problem with that is you're limited to casting it at 1st level; unless your DM lets you use your spell slots to cast it (as newer feats like Fey Touched do) then you're stuck with only 5 HP and damage from it this way.
Even multi-classing isn't really ideal as you'd be multi-classing with Warlock which doesn't mesh terribly well with Artificer (different spell-casting abilities) and the level you can cast Armor of Agathys at will technically be limited to your level in Warlock (though I'm not sure if D&D Beyond handles that?).
If your main focus is the temporary HP, then Artificers can take False Life and cast that normally so you can scale it up to get a lot more HP from it, you just won't get any damage in melee range.
Guardian model armorers get temporary HP from Defensive Field anyway, and I think it's worth noting that Armor of Agathys is very easily wasted; it may last an hour, but it ends when you run out of temporary HP, so with only 5 a single hit will usually end it straight away, and if the enemy that hit you isn't in melee range you won't get any damage out of it.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.

well making something requires GM fiat. (as most things but still worth mentioning).
Hrm. I'd have to look the rules up again, I don't remember if lock slots are lock spells only, and not using others.
Magic Initiate asking to work simliar to the new feats might be the best plan as far as potential GM fiat homebrew~ I am in restrospect, a bit surprised the eratta didn't make magic initiat spells similiar to the new ones.
Cool, I haven't read through most of the Eberron stuff. Seems like that's the best way to do it, since it actually adds the spell to your list for any spellcasting class you're a part of. You're still going to have to deal with the fact that artificers don't progress as fast, but it makes what you're looking for work!
Take the Eldritch Adept feat and take the Fiendish Vigor Invocation. Wala, at will 1st level False Life.
If it was just effectively false life they were after. I'd suggest Guardian Armor as a potential subsitute or Artillerist with their Protector Version of the Eldritch Cannon. The problem is the OP seems to be looking for the damage component as well as the temporary hitpoints. Ironically the Protector Eldritch Canon is probably the superior ability when it comes to that affect between the two differing subclass options.

You are correct, but it can fill the gap between the Armorers Proficiency Bonus number of uses or the Artillerists 1 hour limit of the Cannon being active. Recent surgery+pain meds=my reading skills are sub-par, so my brain completely redacted the whole Armor of Agathys part of the post. I agree about the Protector being the superior THP battery between the two, with near-unlimited uses within the 1-hour duration.
Howdy!

You are an Artificer! Create a magic item that boost your Defensive Field so it works like Armor of Agathys.

The spellwrought tattoo will let you cast it once, but the best way to go is probably Mark of Warding.
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
Take the Eldritch Adept feat and take the Fiendish Vigor Invocation. Wala, at will 1st level False Life.I am a big dummy dumb head who can't read titles.. . . Did you read the title of the thread? False Life is not Armor of Agathys.
