As for the idea of using detect magic in combat to be able to tell when magic is happening... that sounds nice and all, but as I recall, while Raging you can't concentrate on spells, so it's not very useful for a barbarian.
Right now in my current campaign I'm playing as Storm Herald Tortle Barbarian. I took the tavern brawler feat and play him like a wrestler... his specialty is to use his strength and weight to grapple opponents then shove them prone, then just unload on them with unarmed strikes, then slap on the Storm Aura (sea) to repeatedly strike his opponent with lightning. With his opponent pinned down he gets advantage on every attack, and they get disadvantage to dodge the lightning. The opponent has to spend a full action to break the grapple, and when knocked prone they're stuck on the ground, since their move speed of zero prevents them from even trying to get up. It's a devastating build for one-on-one combat...
And, as has been suggested before... he also enjoys grappling opponents and using them as improvised weapons to beat up their allies... although in serious combat it's mostly just going apeshit with a greataxe, although if a particular enemy seems dangerous to the rest of the party it's not uncommon to use the handle as an improvised weapon to bonus-action grapple them and keep them away from everyone else.
Scourge Aasimar Tundra Herald for a damage aura? Tundra would prevent the damage to you while desert would stack more dmg on. Get a meat hook on a chain, hook an unfortunate soul and then use them as a flail? Lizardfolk Ancestral Guardian? Your ghosts are things you've eaten, and you can bite as a primary attack.
Centaur Barbarian with a 3 level dip into rogue for Scout? You grapple someone and then just... keep... running off with them..... I call it "the abductor"
Zariel Tiefling Zealot bound to slay demons in the Blood War?
Drow Barbarian with 3 levels in Hexblade, using the Darkness+Devilsight combo to allow for Elven Accuracy Greataxe, critting on a 19, with brutal critical? (can fall back on faerie fire racial)
Improvise a chain with a weight on it and wack enemies and tangle them up (requires a permissive dm)
