I am a simple dungeon master looking for reasons to play each class. (My players often ask why they should play “x” class and I was wondering what you guys think)
The switching out of your spell list with prepared spells makes clerics versatile and adaptable as well as a more friendly towards experimental players compared to other spellcasters. They can also shift their playstyle in a ton of directions with their domains. Want offensive stuff? You can! Wanna be tanky? You can! Wanna be the ultimate healer, you can!
There are also cool flavorful abilities with channel divinity!
To answer the question, I find them very flexible, as Nano said, you can make them fill almost any role in the party with the right domain and spell choices. I also enjoy playing the party healer, since I like the extra tactical layer it adds in combat, of deciding if its better to hurt the bad guys or heal the good guys.
Off topic. You probably should just make one post and put it in general discussion, instead of putting one in each class thread. You'll get more responses, and it will seem less like your spamming the threads.
I have found that it is easy to fall into tropes when making clerics, but there is so much diversity that people can't see. Almost any virtue, concept, ideal, alignment, etc can be adapted into a cleric subclass. The extra spells really help to identify how you can play, and the class comes with a lot of roleplay benefits. A cleric can be a lowly sailor worshiping gods of fate to map their path of the sea, an distranged artisan who's diety represents the same love of sculpture as the PC themself, the manevolant high priest of the sun god in a distant desert, an ambitious cultist, or anything else!
I love playing support characters. Let others be the face of the party, let others strike the killing blow, let others have their names sung in the Halls. I am content to be the rock that never falters, the shield that never breaks, and the final hope of rescue when all goes wrong. My teammates may be fighting great and terrible enemies - giants, dragons, armies of fiends and undead - and if they are successful they will win treasure of gold, and gemstones, and magic.
But I fight a far greater enemy. For my battle is against Death itself. I am the one who wades amid the din of war and reaches down to raise up a fallen ally. I am the one who stands bleeding but not broken between the wizard and the arrows. I am the one who stares the Valkyrie in the eyes and yells, "F*ck off, ladies. These are mine." And when I am successful, my treasure is not gold, my name will not be sung. My treasure is my teammates. My name may not be known by the bards, but it is respected by Death.
Cleric isn't my favourite class, but I think it just seems super strong. Good to excellent defense on a full caster, strong spells which few other casters have access to and a ton of subclasses, many of which feature strong abilities... I honestly think cleric is the kind of class that's very hard to go wrong with.
I think my main issue with cleric is the name... when I hear cleric I think priest, a person in fancy robes standing in the back being all supportive and fragile.. I like that image, but it is also a rather specific image, and one that doesn't really reflect the cleric very well.. A cleric is more often than not a big tanky character in heavy armor and shield that just happens to be a caster instead of a fighter.
It sounds odd, but I actually miss a dedicated squishy holy caster class in 5e.. CLoest thing is probably divine soul sorc... But then again I generally just don't like the idea of wearing a ton of armor.

That is why I am a cleric.
This is a really great reason to be a cleric. Props to you, AnzioFaro, this is phenomenal.
