I really like the Arcana domain cleric conceptually, and I think it has some really fun features. That being said, its CD: Arcane Abjuration feels like it falls short. Firstly, this CD grants a Turning effect, meaning that between this and Turn Undead, the only thing using your CD feature is good for is Turning. Secondly, unlike Turn Undead, Arcane Abjuration only targets a single creature. Finally, the most interesting part is you get a concentration-free banishment against creatures of a certain CR or lower (similar to Destroy Undead), which is cool but still feels underwhelming against a single target. The only things that make Arcane Abjuration better than Turn Undead is that it has a wider range of targetable creature types and none of those creature types have Turn Immunity baked into higher CR stat blocks.
All of that being said, I was hoping to see if there were any small changes that could be made to Arcane Abjuration to either a) make its usage less situational so it can be used more frequently or b) make its effect more reliable in those more situational moments. Which option(s) do you think are best?
A - Less Situational
A1. Increase the types of creatures that can be targeted by Arcane Abjuration beyond simply extraplanar ones. Let them turn oozes and constructs and other creatures that are arguably "magical" in origin.
A2. Just flat out remove the creature restriction type. You wanna Turn a human? You can do that. You wanna Turn a dragon? You can do that. You are still limited to one creature per usage, which ends early if they take damage and, due to the banishing effect, it will still be the most useful against extraplanar creatures.
B - More Reliable Effects
B1. After level 5, allow the CD to Turn creatures at/below the CR threshold following a successful save with the possibility to banish if they fail their save. Since the CD is already situational and it will be even more situational that you actually run into creatures of the appropriate CR, making sure you get SOMETHING out of your usage of the Channel Divinity would make it feel better. Especially with it only targeting a single creature, having it be a save-or-suck ability makes it feel like a waste.
B2. Allow the CD to target more than one creature. Given that it allows you to target multiple creature types, giving it the same range as Turn Undead might be OP but something like targeting all creatures within 10 feet of you could be a fair tradeoff. Granted, the Oath of Watchers paladin basically gets this sort of CD already, but with less uses and no banish rider.
B3. Increase the CR affected at each level for the banishment - rider to offset only affecting a single target rather than every appropriate creature within 30 feet like Turn Undead. (added this one after making the poll, so could not add it)
In any poll like this you should carve out at least one answer for people who disagree with you. Otherwise your poll is sorta onesided and isn't realiable data.
I don't think Arcane domain needs any changes whatsoever. It is a decently strong subclass as is. The additional optional use of channel divinity to reup spent spell slots was the only fix this subclass needed, and since that's already out there, its perfect.
It has a solid vibe/theme. It has things it does well. It is strongly middle/upper middle of the pack for power if you don’t count the two that often get banned. Is perfect.

I'm probably laughing.
It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.

I didnt make this thread to see how many people think it should be changed or not. I made this thread stating my opinion that it should be changed and was looking for feedback on the best way to do so. I appreciate your opinion, but debating whether or not the Arcana Domain needs changes or not is not the intention of this thread.
While I appreciate that Tasha's gave us a way to use CD to regain spell slots, its kinda boring to be using a core class feature for the Cleric as a spell battery more often than using it to interact with the world/combat in interesting ways. Not to mention, it can only be used a few times per long rest, whereas Channel Divinity resets on a short rest so it is still very likely for someone to have uses of their CD that goes unused because they already tapped out Harness Divine Power.

Personally, I think it'd be cool if instead of being a separate channel divinity, it just upgraded turn undead. It would have the same rules, but give you more targets. However, you'd have to pick a single creature type to use it on. So you couldn't turn undead, fiends, and feys all with one use. However, you could turn a collection of celestials. You'd probably want to keep the banishment on the other creature types.

How to add tooltips on dndbeyond
