So I don't typically play too much Cleric ( I didnt know what I was missing!) But after I made her I was told we were going to be allowed to multiclass at some point. (We can still take feats though)
Now I kinda wish I knew this beforehand but, c'est la vie, because I kind of dumped my trash stat (9) into Charisma which...kinda barred me from taking any levels in Sorcerer
We're at level 4 atm and I had decided to give her the Observer feat if that's any kind of helpful information, I also took heavy armor and a 2-handed warhammer as my starting gear!
Also currently these are my stats: 15/11/14/14/17/9
So I'm basically a little stumped on where to dip down into or if I should monoclass her, right now I play her mid-range and take front lines if necessary (She gets some pretty good hits with Guiding Bolt) I was hoping to take Sorcerer since a friend told me I'd have access to more Lightning spells to combine with my Channel Divinity
also, I usually try to keep her safe during battle as much as I can!
Any suggestions are appreciated! I don't mind answering questions, and also our campaign is weighted more toward RP but we see our fair share of combat too!
Thanks for reading!
Edit: oh goodness I totally botched spelling "something"
Since she seems to take frontlines, any levels in Fighter would help, but if you're the only healer in the party I would say monoclass till you at least get 4th level slots. healers are essential to any party, and honestly a cleric is versatile enough that they don't really need too much multiclassing. Maybe take War Caster eventually though.
Stay single class. Clerics keep getting good stuff every level until like 13 or 14. Tempest has a good list of offensive options as domain spells, and is still a good healer.
Also another vote for warcaster. In fact, change your level 4 feat to it if it’s not too late. It’s a must for clerics in general, and melee clerics in particular.
And you probably will get more mileage out of a shield than a 2-handed weapon. Your damage will come from spells, not weapon attacks. The AC bonus keeps you alive longer, so it keeps you healing more. I played a tempest cleric through level 15, and I think I used my weapon less than 10 times. And all of those were as OA’s before I got warcaster.
It may not be optimal but I'm currently playing a tempest cleric and may take a two level dip in paladin. I play my cleric as a disciple of Kord and a front lines fighter/tank. He will use his cantrips first but if anything is in range has no problem hitting something with his war hammer in one hand and shield in the other.
Right now if I get into melee I'll hit with a warhammer then follow up with spiritual weapon. Whenever I am attacked in return I'll use wrath of the storm to potentially do another 2d8 lighting damage.
If I then dip into paladin I don't need high charisma because all I care about is smite although the fighting style is quite nice too.
So that turns into warhammer + smite + spiritual weapon + wrath of the storm (reaction) which again, while not optimal, is still a lot of fun.
The damage spread between this and straight spell casting is relatively close but as far as straight optimized damage I still get more damage out of harnessing my spells. That is unless I upcast spiritual weapon and smite. Not always recommended but again can be fun.
With your stats if you really want to multiclass you could go two level of War Wizard. Full caster so you keep you spell slot progression and copy your mutual ritual spells to prepare something else. This also allows you to pick up arcane deflection and tactical wit which seem to fit your theme. If your DM lets you move your cantrips around put your Toll the Dead etc on Cleric and things like Light or Mending on Wizard.
These are all super great suggestions and I really appreciate everyone taking the time to comment!
I'll take all of these into consideration! Thank you all so much!
Though if anyone else has any other suggestions do feel free to add them!
Take 1 level of Bloodhunter, take the lightning rite. Choose Polearm Master and Sentinel. Take Half Elf with High Elf cantrip (Booming blade). Have fun.
You could also take some levels in Druid and get more cantrips. Level 2 would give you your Druid Circle and wildshape. You could get the Shillelagh cantrip if you plan on using a melee weapon. If you plan on using Spirit Guardians then the Thorn Whip cantrip becomes very powerful. Taking levels in a full caster like Druid lets your spell slot progression continue as normal, just like if you took levels in Wizard.
Wizard gives you the ability to choose spells like Shocking Grasp and Booming Blade and even Ray of Frost as cantrips, as well as Shield, Absorb Elements and a lot of nice ritual spells. I don't think there's any spells that the Sorcerer gets that the Wizard doesn't get that you would really want. You can basically get all of the spells you wanted from Sorcerer by multiclassing as Wizard.
I think the best option is to just stay Cleric for a while, though. Clerics get some nice higher level spells. You also should change your feat to either War Caster or +2 Wisdom. Taking Observant is good if you have an odd Wisdom score, but it looks like you had 16 Wisdom and then took the Observant feat? Or is your 17 Wisdom not including the +1 bonus from Observant? Warcaster is key if you're a melee caster. Advantage on constitution saving throws to maintain concentration on a spell is huge.
If you have 17 Wisdom, it would also make sense to take +1 Wisdom and +1 Strength (since you have 15 Strength) to increase the damage of your melee attacks along with getting the boost to your spells. If you're not taking Shillelagh as a Druid, then getting your strength higher is useful if you plan on doing melee attacks. And you probably should switch to using a the Warhammer with just one hand and using a Shield. The +2 AC helps a lot more than having a D10 instead of a D8 for damage. Heck, with 16 strength and a D8, you'll basically do as much damage as 15 strength and a D10 (and you'll have slightly better chance to hit). The +2AC is huge when you're concentrating on a spell like Bless, Spirit Guardians, or Call Lightning.
I personally would not recommend a multi-class unless there was a specific reason to do so. A mono-class is usually a stronger, mo coherent character.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I normally go with at least a 5 to 6 level dip in Storm sorcerer with tempest (lightning Bolt), but since your CHA wont allow that. I can suggest going Polearm Master and Sentinel feat. You can now use your OA to stick opponents in place. You get an Opportune Attack if they: Enter your Reach when you have a polearm equip, move out of your reach, and disengage to move out of your reach. If you are using Guardian spirit this will add up in damage.
Note: None of the feats change that you need to use your Reaction for the OA. So use your OA wisely if you have multiple options in the works.
Have you considered a very short dip into Rogue, just for the Bonus Action Dash/Disengage, when you really need to step away from a fight to play healer? Plus you get a few more proficiencies, and the occasional little sneak attack bump if you pick up a ranged weapon at some point.

The OP posted in June of 2020. They have almost certainly resolved the situation by now.
Moreover. There is zero reason to step away from a fight to heal, that's what healing word is for. And clerics have very good ranged cantrips, which will be far, far more effective than any ranged weapon, particularly with blessed strikes.
