I'm personally very sad to see that they lost Darkness and gained Moonbeam. Moonbeam is just bad, even if it's thematic. Darkness was generally useful and you could make an interesting build using the new invocation feat for Devil's Sight. Sadly that's gone now.
if your DM is willing to let you game the system a little bit, you can make a mark of shadow elf from Eberron, and get Darkness added to your spell list.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
In all honesty, the Twilight Cleric didn’t lose Darkness. You’d just have to prepare it instead of it being always on tap. It simply makes sense to give domains access to more spells from outside the normal Cleric list.
Darkness isn't a cleric spells. The Twilight Clerid did in fact lose Darkness.
Eh, must have confused it with Silence. But Silence/Sleep can be a useful combo.
In my opinion granting your friends the ability to see through darkness at level 17 is a bit too little too late. You've either long worked around it or stopped using it because of problems with your group to begin with. Darkness is not a bad spell but it can be problematic and if you were going to get a solution for it then it should be at a lot lower level.
Half cover on the other hand is at least a passive +2 to AC and dex saves just for being nearby the cleric. That's not exactly a bad thing. Specially at high level where you've probably long run out of ways to just passively increase your armor rating and your active attempts at it probably take several turns to set up. And it applies to any number of people within that radius. It may not be mind blowing. But that's far from the worst thing to get at that level.
I am playing my cleric again for the first time since this update later today. Covid did put our group on hiatus. Invisibility was my most used spell and darkness is amazing, losing them in many way ruin the charakter I played.

My friend 1d6+1 is the same average hp as 1d8. I know this post is from 2 years ago, but I hope your opinion of the class has changed.
