Heya! So i've been having a blast playing my Fighter up till now but now i get to make a choice which i would like some input on from more experienced players.
I need to choose between either Shield Master, Sentinel or +2 ASI.
I'm leaning more to Shield master since i play sword and board mostly but the disengage part for sentinel is appealing aswell.
So some info about me:
- Lizardfolk Fighter, speciality Duelist
- stats: STR 15, DEX 13, CON 15, INT 12, WIS 12, CHA 12.
- I'm a BattleMaster with these Maneuvres: Commander's Strike,- Menacing Attack,- Pushing Attack.
I'm a Lizardfolk so survival and strength are some of my top concerns. I do protect others that protect me but i like to show off my own prowess.
Quick recap:
- Shield master: Bonus action for 5 ft shove, causing prone. DEX save throw to halve the dmg, completely as reaction. Add shields AC to DEX saving throw as long as i'm not incapacitated.
- Sentinel: creature leaves my reach? AoO. When hit, movement goes to zero. Creature attacks somebody else in my reach? i can attack as reaction (melee).
This is my very first thread and my first serious character so i'd like to do it right. If i forgot something please enlighten me :)
15 STR sounds strange. Same for your CON. Ideally you should start with at least 16 in you main stat. If there’s no way for you too rework your stats (those 12s in INT and CHA are bad), I would strongly recommend you to round up both STR and CON to 16.
In case your DM let’s you adjust your stats accordingly, it’s important to understand how he rules Shield Master. Does he allow the shove bonus action to happen BEFORE your attacks? If yes, go for it!
Sentinel is a nice feat, but works much better if you have other melee allies nearby to activate the feat features, if not, don’t even bother.
I’d boost str and con. Not flashy, and it doesn’t give you new toys, but it’s reliable, and you’ll use the str every single fight. And the con will help hp and saves.

Yeah i think you're right! i read a bit more and most just level up their main stat at least to 20, so i'll go with that. Thanks for the input!

I've run this by my DM and bonus action comes after action so that's a let down, thanks for the heads up!
The stats were the cards i was dealt so i did my best on them, i'll sink the ASI in STR and CON and round them up.
Thanks!
