I am playing a V Human Rune Knight with a 1-level Rogue dip. She is going to go to 8th level in Fighter. Wonder feat to take at 9th level (Rogue 1/Rune Knight 8) and then after that either more Rogue levels (and what subclass) or triple class to Barbarian or Ranger. Campaign ends at level 13. Rest of party is a Barbarian, Warlock, Sorcerer and Druid/Monk.
Stats: S20 D13 C16 I8 W12 CH8 She has the Tavern Brawler feat and unarmed combat fighting style and expertise in Athletics and Stealth (although Stealth has disadvantage). Proficiency in Animal Handling, Survival, Investigation, Perception and Slight of Hand. Her Runes are Stone, Cloud and Hill. She wears plate, usually with no shield but she carries a shield on her back and occasionally uses it.
One tactic is to make an unarmed strike, then bonus action grapple, then use the second attack to shove prone. Then she pulls out her magic dagger and uses a combination of sneak attacks and unarmed strikes on subsequent rounds while doing an extra 1d4 per turn due to the fighting style (and another 1d6 with giants might if that is active). She has a +11 Athletics (+13 at 9th level), she often has advantage due to Giants might and opponents often have disadvantage because our Warlock Hexes them on Strength. She rarely fails a grapple or shove (I think she has failed 2 all campaign).
For feats debating a few different feats at 8th level:
Gunner - this gets me a 14 Dex and ability to make ranged attacks without disadvantage while I have someone grappled. There are guns in the campaign, but with a 14 Dex I am probably better off throwing javelins most of the time (or daggers when sneak attack is an option).
Martial Adept - I would get trip attack here. Then on a single attack I could hit with an unarmed strike, trip an opponent and then grapple as a bonus action. I would have a 2nd attack left so I can follow that with a sneak attack if it all lands instead of using my second attack for shove. Only downside is strength is a good save for a lot of baddies and it is only once per short rest.
Fey Touched with Hex and Wisdom - I have no spells so this would be a once a day Hex and a once a Day Misty Step. Misty Step is great for grappling flyers. Hex would give me a way to impose disadvantage and a minor damage boost. I could also use it when out of Giant's might. Downside is I don't have a great stat to boost, I guess Wisdom is the best? This would also enable a triple class to Ranger.
Any other ideas?
Higer level Class options
Rogue - Gets cunning action (but bonuses are already cluttered). Gets me a feat at 12th level. What subclass to pick? Scout gets me an ability to move as a reaction when I am grappling someone, although only 7.5 feet and expertise in Nature and Survival. Arcane Trickster - Spells are always good. Phantom?
Barbarian - Rage when I run out of Giants might. How many levels 1, 4?
Ranger - If I boost Wisdom I can pick up Ranger levels. Probably Gloomstalker which would give me another fighting style (probably Defense), another expertise (investigation probably with proficiency in animal handling), favored foe, and a few spells.
You could always boost con. Hit points, and up your save DC for your rune.
Or crusher to get some battlefield control with your fists, punch someone so hard you knock them back 5’ plus the other knock-one there. It gives you the +1 con boost, and if you do get another feat aberrant dragonmark (I’m planning this for my rune knight, flavoring it like I actually carved a rune onto my skin) can round out con, and give you a couple toys.
