I made another thread about the potential for battle-field control and enemy lockdown with the new One DnD options (Link Here) and so I thought I would try my hand at a build and see what you thought.
Torvak Stonebreaker
Str 10, Dex 17 (15 +2), Con 16 (15+1), Int 10, Wis 11, Cha 10
Species: Goliath (Hill Giant) Ancestry. This will allow me to knock an enemy prone (no save) on a hit (Proficiency Bonus x/long rest). Average effective 15ft. movement reduction
Background: Criminal (+2 dex, +1 con, Slight of Hand and Stealth, with the Alert feat)
Class: Fighter (Acrobatics and Perception skills), eventually choosing the Battlemaster
Lv1: Archery Fighting Style (increase chance to hit) Push Mastery (as well as Nickand Vex) for an effective 10ft. movement reduction
At this point I can knock an enemy back 10ft. and prone if I hit them - at range or in melee.
Lv2: Action Surge (for double the attacks)
Lv3: Battlemaster (Pushing Attack / Trip Attack (Str Save) Average effective 15ft. movement reduction
At this point once per short rest, I can knock two enemies enemy back 25ft. and prone
Lv4: Crossbow Expert
Lv5: Extra Attack
Now I'm knocking two enemies a turn out of any possibility of doing melee damage from Crossbow range, with the option to do that to four enemies once per short rest.

Poor rule, along Warlock smite it allows for taking out of any flying creature at range with no save.... I certainly wouldn't allow it or, or at least not with ranged weapons.
Knocking ancient dragons out of the air with no SAVE? Having to redesign encounters for it? It was clearly written for melee builds, but allowing it for ranged attacks is the problem. Nerf it or disallow it.
Hill’s Tumble (Hill Giant). When you hit a Large or smaller creature with an attack roll and deal damage to it, you can give that target the Prone condition.
you technically can’t do that without shenanigans:
which would be: the following;
Large Form. Starting at character level 5, you can change your size to Large as a Bonus Action if you’re in a big enough space. This transformation lasts for 10 minutes or until you end it (no action required).
Then either potion/spell/scroll to enlarge again, now would make you huge, so now you can knock one level up prone. Way to much coordination and time wasted in my opinion.
You could never knock an adult or ancient dragon out of the air or even prone since the rule states "when you hit a large or smaller creature". So anything bigger than large isn't affected, no matter how big you are.
I agree with Burgen that I would never allow it with a ranged weapon attack. Goes against common sense (and IMO the spirit of the rule) if an arrow fired by a Hill Goliath would take a young dragon out of the air but if the same arrow was fired by a Stone Goliath (or an elf, human, dwarf, etc.) it wouldn't. A melee attack makes sense because you can see how a Hill Goliath could get an advantage since they are rooted to the ground.
Hey there! I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I wanted to ask, isn't crossbow expert sort of diminished in usefulnes seeing as you need to attack with a one handed weapon to attack as a bonus action? Thanks!

Not exactly. The old version gave you the ability to attack with a hand crossbow using a bonus action if you'd already used the Attack action with a one-handed weapon.
The new version no longer has that, but that's because you can now do that without the Crossbow Expert feat as long as the one-handed weapon you attack with in your Attack action is Light. The new version of the feat now allows adding your ability modifier to the damage roll of the bonus action attack when you do this.
This ends up being basically the same behavior as the old version, just with the Light limitation on the first attack. So it's not any less useful if you're using a Light weapon.

Why wouldn’t you allow it? It seems a weird place to draw a line when not allowing it takes away player agency

Not quite a poorly written as Eldritch Smite then which allows Huge, but still out of line.
