So, I just recently started my first campaign with a group and my character is a Goliath Fighter with the Soldier background. He is kind, but somewhat unsociable due to war ptsd. I want to build his character mechanically towards his characteristics build. I want him to be a protector and trained fighter, maybe even somewhat magical, but with a rather short fuse. He'll likely be one of the main damage dealers as well since he is 1 of 2 close combat characters in a party of 8... yes, 6 spellcasters, this can only go well... But I have a hard time figuring out if I should focus on one of the Archetypes for fighter, staying within a single class or multiclass into Barbarian for some of the interesting mechanical combos you can make that further reflect the fact he has seen war and it has messed him up a little... Yes, I am talking about Rage. So I wanted to see if anyone has interesting suggestions, maybe even mechanical combos I haven't even thought of yet to represent his character more.
Fighter with 3 levels barbarian (berserker) seem closest thing to a war veteran with ptsd. The magical factor maybe an issue since there will be a lot of spells that needs concentration and it won't work with rage. Player style? Either weapon and shield or two handed weapon user. Both can soak up a lot of damage and deal as much, try getting heavy armour asap with heavy armour master feat and you'll be just fine.
The flavour stuff will be up for you, for social problem his charisma has to be the lowest to reflect the personality. That's all I can think off at this moment and good luck mate !
