Does a Renegade's Gunfighting form require ammunition to use? I expect that since it's not related at all to the Gunslinger it doesn't implement misfire values and the like but for the life of me I can't rationalize the renegade just having infinite ammo guns. It may be because I don't understand the lore of the subclass.
I think it’s safe to assume you need ammunition, yes. since it doesn’t specify, I’d default to the firearm rules in the DMG for details about how many shots before you need to reload, range, etc, unless you end up picking up a more advanced form as you level which overrides what it says there.
There are no ammunition requirements - it's assumed that the renegade is experienced enough to take sufficient ammunition with them for anything they may encounter.
You're correct that this is a lore thing. 🙂
If you wish to track ammunition in some capacity in your game, then please do so.
I have a question. How do I access any of these new (temporary) subclasses?
It's free content, so when you first make a character (on the character preferences) be sure you have both "Noncore D&D Content" and "runeterra content" enabled. If you just want to look up the subclasses just go to the class pages.
i have a question concerning the gunfighter form actions. for the sniper at least, it clarifies that as an action you can make a ranged attack roll to deal 1d10 +dex damage. is this affected by the fighters innate extra attack? furthermore, one of the mods you can choose for the sniper is the double barrel, allowing you to make two ranged attacks when using the gunfighter form feature. my understanding is that the gunfighter form is NOT affected by extra attack, but if that's so im having trouble rationalizing why you'd want to use it, when you could use something like a heavy cross bow (or better yet, since you already are accepting guns as a viable weapon class, a hunting rifle or something similar), and be just as effective, especially at 11th level when you get 3 attacks instead of just 2, (barring mod effects of course)

In short gunfighter form =/= the attack action. So when you use the sniper you just scale up the damage (less you get the double barrel). I personally don't know, i haven't crunched the numbers myself, but I've already made up my mind that renegade is to champion as gunslinger is to battle master. I'm personally not a fan of renegade, but I can understand people liking how simplistic it is.

The way I see it is that you are trading 3-4 attacks for two hard hitting attacks that by 7th level outright ignores resistances while maintaining a freaky good distance of 120 feet with the disadvantage penalty you would get if you went Heavy Crossbow. Add in the firearm upgrades that up your damage even more or cause some AoE damage and its a fair trade off. Other martial classes make due with two attacks just fine, so having a Fighter with a special ability that can only hit a target twice 1-2 times per action isn't a hinderance imo.
There's also nothing stopping you from using an actual ranged weapon in conjunction with the Sniper Form. The Renegade has a level of flexibility that lends itself well to the Fighter Class.
