So I'm making a second character for Decent into Avernus. I'm basically set on Arcane Archer. I was debating between
AA 11/1 War Cleric or going (giving up fighter 3rd attack) AA 7/5 War Cleric either maxing dex and Int or adding sharpshooter. Also I would add our party has no cleric nor any ranged whatsoever.
The first thing I see is stopping at either 11 or 7 means you are one level short of an asi. For that alone, I’d be more likely to say 8/4. (Or just 12, I’m not a huge fan of multiclass) But at 8/4 you give up level 3 cleric spells, so you’ll need to decide which is more important. When you say no cleric, I’m hoping there’s still healing. And, really anyone can be ranged, not necessarily good at it, but can be. I don’t know Avernus, so I don’t know what you’ll be up against. But if there’s a lot of undead, you’ll wish you had a cleric.
That's a good point...I'm fine with one set of ASI and maxing either int or dex. So 7/5 is good. I'm assuming that the 1-13 adventure will only take me to 12.
Yes I want some healing added in as we have none as well as utility for me.
Edit** there is basically no healing minus a paladin who has lay on hands. That's it.
I’m assuming you mean maxing wis or dex, since int won’t do much for a fighter/cleric. And if there’s no cleric, I’d say to be sure to take that cleric level early so you can have some healing word to toss around. Forcing the pally to run around being a medic is not the best use of its actions.
I'm also starting out 6/1 since we're already in Avernus when my Barbarian died. Unlucky nat 1 on death saving throws
I had my cavalier die the same way. Not Avernus, the nat 1.
AA is int. I’d forgotten. Pretty MAD in that case. Probably stick to buff/ heal spells, but I’m guessing you knew that. Unless you rolled scores and did well.
The one problem I see with this build is that you'll be sacrificing the main Stat for Cleric or diminishing the abilities of the Arcane Archer by having a character that would rely on Dex, Int and Wis. It is a very MAD build that I would recommend trying to figure out something else entirely like going Ranger/Cleric so that you can remove the need for a third ASI.

Dex or Int as the AA shots are based off intellect.

Point buy for scores. I can max int and dex (no sharpshooter) if i go 8/4 but no 3rd level spells.
