The issues with the Beastmaster are the clunky way attacking with the companion is and how fragile the beast would be at higher levels. You'd spend an action to have the pet attack, and after 5th level you could make a single attack with it. That means you can't use 2WF with the beast, as you weren't taking the Attack action. This could've been avoided by having the pet attack in place of one of your own when taking the Attack action. Yes, 3rd and 4th levels would still have that issue, but 5th onward wouldn't. But I digress.
I stand behind the opinion that Giant's Might was over-nerfed, and that they could've instead delayed the growing large bit until level 10, as the runes granted at 3rd level are quite good on their own.
Probably because the Champion is at least usable as written, while the Beast Master required hyper-specialized building to not be an outright liability.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

the PHB beast master feature specifically says that you can replace one of your attacks when you take the attack action with your ranger. This already potentially worked with two weapon fighting at level 5.

The feature is actually you gaining an attack when ordering the beast to take it's attack action... So even though it's very similar, you're actually not taking the attack action yourself, so you don't qualify for two weapon fighting.
Wow, you’re completely right. I’ve read that sentence so many times focusing on just the “attack action” portion, not taking in and understanding that the feature basically gives you a new action to have another entirely different creature use their attack action.
this really was a perfectly worded sabotage of a subclass feature. They even took the time to errata it and kept it trash. Can’t be enhanced with any feats either.
Yea that feature really gives the impression that it was designed before they'd figured out how they wanted to do certain things... There are are a few strange things like that in 5e

The older this edition gets the more cracks show in the original design....they took a more simplistic approach and it turns out it left quite a few exposed seams in a lot of features.
Overall they have done some work to fix this but it has really given me an appreciation for a system that has a lot fewer holes (PF2e).
I still love 5e as its amazing to run as a DM but I do think that they need to work on their in house playtesting as this kind of stuff STILL happens even on new things.
So with the updates from Tasha - some interesting changes to Runeknight. But this one just confuses me:
Giant’s Might
3rd-level Rune Knight feature
You have learned how to imbue yourself with the might of giants. As a bonus action, you magically gain the following benefits, which last for 1 minute:
Once on each of your turns, one of your attacks with a weapon or an unarmed strike can deal an extra 1d6 damage to a target on a hit.
(I've removed the other benefits)
Anyone else think the change from +D6 to weapon attacks (all attacks) when enlarged, to 1 attack a turn, makes no sense? If you're bigger, your weapon doesn't just do a bit more damage on one attack than the other? (and as it's per turn, any reaction attacks, like AoO get the +D6)
The enlarge spell is all attacks. As does Hunters Mark etc. Okay they are concentration to lose, but this is a limited class ability.
It just doesn't make sense to me? If you're big, and your weapons are big...nope = the weapons grows and then shrinks?
(if it was a power thing, it could have always been changed to a D4, to match the spell?)
This would really hurts any 2WF!
And everyone when you get extra attack.
Or am I just complaining about nothing?
Yes, it makes no sense to get a D6 once per turn. Yes, it would have been better to get a D4 for every attack. Additionally the damage die wouldn't need to get increased to a d8 and a d10 trough class features, as your damage output would naturally grow with additional attacks. Runic juggernaught should at most increase the damage to 2d4 to reflect the increase in die. So enlarge/reduce added on a level 18 rune knight gets 3d4 to every attack.
I'm really not a fan of "once per turn" damage boosts on classes with multiple attacks.. it just feels kinda lame.. I would've prefered lowering the die aswell... It's especially unstafisfying because certain sublass features for the rune knight are mostly just about the die increasing a step.. which isn't very impactful at all when it's once per turn.
The "Great Stature" feature at lvl 10 literally only only increases your die and then an entirely cosmetic upgrade.. I think the rune knight's starting features are really interesting, but "Great stature" feels like it should be a minor side benefit instead being the entirety of what you get at lvl 10.
Well, it IS a minor side benefit. Don't forget that, aside from Great stature, you also get to pick an extra rune. The runes are where the power of the subclass is at anyway. Compare this to the battlemaster, a widely lauded subslass. At level 10 it increases it's martial arts die from d8 to d10 and you get two extra manouvers to choose from but without giving you an extra martial arts die to actually use those manouvers.

Fair point!

im happy tashas changes this.
thank you
