So I'm playing a 4th level Half-Orc Battle Master in a Descent into Avernus campaign and everyone is getting their butt kicked since day 1. My build has the Defense fighting style + the Polearm Master feat with a magic spear (1d12 + 1d4 dmg) and the weird Hidden Lord Shield (no spoilers pls). My AC is 23 right now, but I want to help the party more because everyone is going down every time. One PC has died and others have been really close to death. We're in Candlekeep right now and our DM told us we're close to level 5.
So, my question is: Is it a good idea to get levels in Barbarian? I'm thinking of reaching level 5 to get Extra Attack and see if I start the multiclass starting from level 6. If so, how many levels and which subclasses could be better?
I take it from your restriction to barbarian that you're stats are focused in strength, dexterity, and Constitution. And I'm not sure how much help levels and barbarian will be for your party. You having a little more resilience likely won't help keep them on their feet if they're going down so easily. Especially given the time it will take to Gaines barbarian subclass features. So I think you might have better luck sticking with your battle Master because you get another combat boosted seventh level, that's seventh level you get two more maneuvers and another superiority die.
If I'm wrong about your stat distribution and I would recommend a casting class to help bolster your companions. Clerics and Druids are support classes by nature and there's also a lot of versatility in warlocks of classes.
Thanks! The only classes I can multiclass to are rogue and barbarian because I have other scores under 13 haha. I guess I'll have to manage to get all the aggro so that everyone else is not close to danger.
Stick with fighter at least to 6 for that ASI. Sentinel can really help lock down enemies and force them to attack you, if that’s what you want. Or if you’re the one going down, a con bump can help a little.
PCs getting close to death is the sign of a good DM who knows how to keep the encounters exciting, not something to worry about. Though I do question giving a legendary magic item to a teir 1 player. And that spear has got to be some kind of homebrew (and also sounds op) so who knows.
Yeah I think I'll stay as a fighter and get Sentinel, although Piercer catched my eye too.
The spear is super OP but I'm kinda the only PC that actually does damage. The party is full of control casters and healers, so we spent a ton of money to get a super weapon and balance it out. Maybe if someone dies we could get another bruiser lol
I don't know of any class that can't stand up and deal damage if they want to. Maybe you people need to cut some of the overlap with CC for some extra DPS.
