That works well. I would consider replacing goliath with variant human and take the alert feat to be sure to win intiative. No good one-rounding if you get one-rounded first.
Lol considering this is in the fighter subforum i'm going to point out that running a human variant fighter with either PAM/Glaive or Crossbow Expert with Hand Crossbow are two very strong level 1 fighter archetypes.
A really strong level 1 character is the human variant monk however, take a the feat that lets you take a fighting style from fighters and take the unarmed style from tasha's. Now as long as you wield no weapon all your unarmed strikes do d8s at level 1.
A Human Variant Hexblade might be decent. Taking Magic Initiate to get Magic Missile. Hexblade's Curse + Magic Missile deals minimum of 12 Force damage up to a whopping potential maximum of 21. And against pesky casters with the Shield spell you can instead use Hexblade's Curse + Toll the Dead. For defense you have a respectable 11 HP and with scale mail and a shield you have a AC of 18 which can shoot up to 23 with the Shield spell.
If you are more concerned with survival you can grab Absorb Elements with Magic Initiate instead and just rely on Hexblade's Curse + Toll the Dead for damage.
A contest like this pretty much depends entirely on the details of the arena. The starting position of the characters involved. And who wins initiative. If this is one on one. The Faster character is going to win the fight basically all of the time because at level 1 hitpoints are low for pretty much everybody due to limited number of hitdice and limited stats for any significant bonus over those hitdice. Things like Rage are not yet Active if you do not get to go first to mitigate damage and there is potential that the person that gets to go first can use the arena or positioning to make it so that you can't strike them back if they can't take you down in the first turn of combat and prepare for your attempt to attack them before you get to go. Even potentially costing you precious resources (such as one of your only 2 spell slots) on things like shield in the process.
