Stunning Strike is the anchor around the Monks neck. If that was the capstone instead of being low level, a world of opportunities would open up.
Replace Flurry of Blows with *Kata*: When you take the attack action using a monk weapon, as part of that attack, may make additional unarmed attack rolls equal to your proficiency modifier.
Free up the bonus action, save Ki for special occasions.
Remember that anyone using light weapons can make an off hand attack as a bonus action. (Two-weapon fighting PHB Ch9).
Monks should get access to fighting styles too.
Monkey Style (Unarmed Fighting) Your unarmed strikes can deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier on a hit. If you aren’t wielding any weapons when you make the attack roll, the d6 becomes a d8.
Rhino Style (Interception) When a creature you can see hits a target, other than you, within 5 feet of you with an attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage the target takes by 1d10 + your proficiency bonus (to a minimum of 0 damage). You must be wielding a simple or martial weapon to use this reaction.
Bat Style (Blind Fighting) You have blindsight with a range of 10 feet. Within that range, you can effectively see anything that isn’t behind total cover, even if you’re blinded or in darkness. Moreover, you can see an invisible creature within that range, unless the creature successfully hides from you.
Tiger Style (Two-Weapon Fighting) When you engage in two-weapon fighting, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second attack.
Snake Style (Dueling) When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon.
The Unarmed Defense should probably just be the Barbarian version by default and then give other options to subclasses. Maybe Wis+Con for Astral Self for example.
There's a lot that can be done with an entire rewrite. Maybe we'll get something good in 5.5.

Monks will get access to fighting styles as part of the Warrior group. Unfortunately, we have to wait for the next UA, who knows when, before we see what they are doing with the monk.
