I think you're forgetting that the cleric capstone is a free wish spell once every 7 days with no necrotic damage or chance to loose the ability to cast it because God is casting it.
Not quite. However, what does this have to do with Monks, whether they multiclass or not?
I believe they were responding to your claim that the monk capstone was the strongest in the PHB. A wish might beat that though it is limited in use. whereas the bonus to Dex/wis are always on so you get much more out of it.
I’m sure everyone will have their take on what’s stronger. But you are right, it is off topic

The probably statement that would be universal excepted is the Rangers capstone sucks the most.
But there is a great argument to be made that Monks/Barbs capstone are tops amongst all classes. But like you said it’s subjective to everyone opinion, with the only true exception is Rangers.

I apologize. I misspoke, it was Brokencityfire who made the statement I was referring to.
All true. I was first trying to get the thread back on topic. But I’m also curious which class combinations have the best synergy. I am curious about Rangers and I am looking for a more DPR and mobility oriented character, primarily for tier 2 play, party needs aside.

From my experience, I’m playing a Mercy/Gloom ranger (2014) soon to alter to 2024. To me it was the perfect choice for what I wanted and also provides the group with deficiencies as well. The ability to be invisible at night or in dungeons is awesome (helped out lots of times). Plus the added dpr with hunters mark and the ability to cast darkness myself. Also combo with blindsight. If you have access to Tasha/Xan books there’s other options if you going dip that far in Ranger
Sounds like an amazing combo. How might hunter’s mark work with monk — do monks end up having a bonus action to spare?
I assume cast Hunter's Mark or change marked target as a Bonus Action, make normal attacks. If you use a Nick weapon, (all Nick weapons are Light so far and therefore Monk Weapons), you can make your normal number of attacks + 1 as part of the attack action and can replace the weapon die with the Monk Martial Arts Die. So that's 2 attacks at levels 1-4, 2 attacks at 5+.
Turn 2, or turn 1 if you had it up on the right target before combat, you then use an Attack action for 2 or 3 attacks and expend one Ki point to flurry for 2 additional unarmed strikes as a Bonus Action. You cannot flurry and cast Hunter's Mark or change the marked target in the same turn.
If I weee to do a Monk Ranger, what distribution of levels would you do if you had 12 to play with?
Oh, I'd say only 2 or 3 levels in ranger, 5 if you want more spells, but I would not recommend more than 5 in ranger to conserve ki points.

I'm just your everyday dungeon master. Ignore that jar full of souls. And those bones in the corner are just props, don't worry. I'm definitely NOT a lich. Definitely.
Yes, I like beholders. Yes, I curated an exquisite personality for commoner #2864. Yes, my catchphrase is "are you sure?"
This is excellent advice! I would suggest 3 for the Ranger subclass. Gloomy is probably the most potent on a Monk. Wisdom bonus to initiative, extra burst of speed, and invisible condition in some cases. The weapon mastery properties work well, as does tagging a bigger foe with Hunters Mark for the extra damage dice.
I'm playing monk and my primal role a tank and single targets eliminations (for now at least). Recently the party gets 6th level and there is a question should I multiclass. Because of my tank role I'm considering a 3 lvl barbarian (Path of the wild heart).
On the one hand weapon mastery, advantage on dex saves and resist to almost all types of damage sound very good in other hands it's a three level which is a huge, besides weapon mastery I could get at lvl 8 from a feat, barb damage resistance do not cover all damage types (undeads are one of our enemies) and damage resistance monk will get itself on lvl 18 (which is far away but we plan play to lvl 20)
So does staying in one class is a good idea? Or multiclassing is must have for monks?

I recommend just one level in barbarian, as that gives you the best features of the dip.
Cast Hunters mark, then attack 3 times (2 with extra attack, 1 with nick daggers)= 3d8+3d6+3*dex damage.
Next turn, repeat above but use FOB instead of HM = 6d8+6d6+6*dex=66 avg dpr

Except the capstone and possibly a Boon. Since it is still arguable that you get it at straight 19th level or as long as your levels add up to 19. I think the latter is silly since, you could use the same argument for getting the capstone. Tells you what side of the fence I'm on.

Druid's level 20 is also pretty bad.

So what is the best multi-class for monk?
Is Ranger worth it?
Ranger, Fighter, Rogue
druid, cleric
any of those work. “Best” is loaded word that everyone throws out loosely. Like it’s always responded to is,
1. What play style you looking for with your character, dpr, utility, control.
2. Which is in conjunction with 1. What works with your parties needs because that’s an important factor. Maybe lacking healing, or dpr, etc.
3. What level your table is playing or planning on stopping.

Our party has a Gloom5 ranger/Kensai 12 (so far) monk using longbow as a kensai weapon, sharpshooter etc (all 2014) and proving very dangerous.
Life's hard - get a helmet!
