This feature is good for a level or two and after that it is really bad. After watching it in play for a significant amount of time I can say the scaling on this feature is terrible. At 15th level monk the average roll is about 16 damage save for 8. There are many times that the damage rolled is less than 16 and our group cannot help but laugh at how bad it is.
This feature should add another martial arts die of damage at 10th, 14th and 18th.
Do you mean Elemental Burst? Yeah, the damage is not very impressive. It's probably not worth spending your Focus Points on unless you're sure you can hit a large number of targets with it.

Yeah, it's kind of expensive in focus points, probably isn't worth the damage output unless you can tap at least three targets. I've only really used it in combat once, and it was indeed mook cleanup.
I've had an AnyDice script lying around for a couple months that calculates statistics on the damage based on the Monk's level, Wisdom Score, and target's Dex Save modifier.

Rant over.

Yeah, it's mostly for mook cleanup, even when you get it.
But mook cleanup is one thing monks aren't good at.
Yes, I meant elemental Burst.
