Oath of the crown suits the tank fantasy pretty well.
But I do wanna mention an important factor, and that's about how you kinda have to care about doing damage. For example, let's look at two paladins: paladin A increased their damage through ASIs, feats, and weapon choice. Paladin B increases their CON first thing and pumps their AC as high as possible via fighting styles and shields. In combat, opponents will understand that Paladin B is much harder to hit (and doens't even hit that hard) , so he gets put on the backburner while they go after his squishy bard and wizard friends. Meanwhile, Paladin A is an active threat that has to be dealt with as soon as possible, and while his AC isn't as high, it's not discouraging and therefore a valid choice for enemies to attempt to hit. It would seem, that if you want to draw hits to yourself, you can't just focus on being the tankiest tank to ever tank.
Thankfully, I think Oath of The Crown has an easier time with balancing out their threat level while focusing on tankiness. at lvl 9 you'll access spirit guardians, and that's such a huge threat to any encounter. You'll be focused down, if only to knock your concentration out. So, what I'd recommend is to start with both STR and CHA at 16, at lvl 2 grab dueling fighting style if you go for sword-n-shield, or defense if you opt to use greatswords or polearms, and increase CHA at lvl 4, and grab Res:con at lvl 8. This way, your spell DC should be decent enough along with a good aura, and your damage won't suffer cause spirit guardians later on, and if things do try to make you lose concentration they'll have a tough time overcoming both your aura and con proficiency save.
Thanks a lot I was thinking in crown oath but also redemptiom both seems peetty good as tank . Also i have gios rolled stats: 17 16 16 16 10 6
I was thinking maybe interception or duelist or defense . And getting res con at lvl 4 and lvl 8 maybe max con . Mostly wanna to go shield and sword . What you think? Thanks dfor the tips
a 6 in CHA? man that's super rough. That's going to make a lot of your spells kinda sucky. Ask your DM if you can swap the 16 in DEX for the 6 CHA. If you go sword and shield, grab duelist to keep you as an active threat.
If you grab res: con at 4, then I'd say the only spell you want to use at any given moment is bless all the way to lvl 9,for most encounters (except boss fights, but that's where compelled duel comes in). The DM will attack you because an extra d4 for anything is too good to ignore. That's basically gonna be your go-to strategy for most encounters, especially if the DM doesn't allow you to swap out that 6 CHA. But if he does let you swap then, then your other go-to strategy will be to use compelled duel for boss fights and mini-boss fights to ensure that boss focuses you and you alone.
Anyways, if you do grab res: con at 4, make sure to increase CHA at 8 unless the DM says CHA stays at 6. Then, increase STR instead with a half feat or something like slasher or something. Remember, you want to be an active threat in order to keep attention on you!
Sorry i mean thoose were the rolls i can distribute whererever i want . Im going to put 6 on int and 10 on wisdom or 10 on dex . And i have 17 for con 16 cha and 16 str ill guess im pickinh half elf +2 char 1 on str 1 on con
Thoughts ? Also im struggling between redemption or crown . Seems redemption is a little bit better :/ mostly for counterspell and the lvl 7 aura . Remember it will only go to lvl 13 max thanks again
I think oath of conquest might be a good fit for tank, since you get Armor of Agathys, Hold Person, and Fear for battle field control and extra hitpoints. And the channel divinity is pretty good. But between Redemption or Crown, I'm going to recommend Redemption over Crown for being a tank.
A paladin in heavy armor with the first two feats should be able to take a LOT of damage.
heavy armor master and tough sounds nice but i think resilent con should be a must first at lvl 4
Be careful with heavy armor master. It gets much less useful as you level and have more and more enemies who have magic attacks that bypass the resistance. And the resistance doesn’t scale well. It’s kind of ok at 8, by 12, it’s pretty much crap.
Oath of Devotion is the best suited to dealing with undead and fiends. Its very powerful in Decent into Avernus
oath of devotion seems good but.. i think oath of the watcher is way much better for this campaing cause
watcher will the int wis char saving throw wll come more handy than sacred weapon and
the lvl 7 aura of boots iniciative that will come on everybattle will come much more effective than the immune to fright aura .
and abjure the extraplanar have celestials, elemental , fey , fiends.
Here's my take on the Oath of the Watchers in regards to the campaign you mention, and compared to a Oath of Devotion Paladin.
Simply put its abilities while versatile are not that great especially going down into hell.
Compared to the Oath of Devotion it's not as specialized or able to resist the powers and the abilities of the majority of the creatures you'll encounter.
Let's use the points you brought up.
Having advantage on saving throws for int, wis, and cha is nice I'm not going to lie. However, it's not as useful in battle as having a +5 to hit and turning a weapon magical. I went through the majority of the campaign with out a magical weapon in AL. Further it's not as useful as having complete immunity to being charmed all the time. It also really doesnt come fully online until lvl 18 when everything within 30ft also benefits from Aura of Protection.
Well first you're getting your Auras mixed up. You are mixing up Aura of Courage, which every Paladin has, with Aura of Devotion which is immunity to being charmed for you and your party. And while a boost to initiative is nice. It is not the same as bestowing complete immunity to players from a very devastating ability.
Finally Abjure the Extraplaynar is virtually useless in Decent into Avernus besides the its ability to be used on undead and fiends, which is really the only things you'll encounter.
The Oath of Devotion also has protection from evil and good permanently on its spell list and at lvl 15 imposes the spell effects permanently. The majority of the spells you'll get from Watchers wont be used in favor of smite. Generally if Paladins use spells it's only for 1st level spells like shield of Faith, command, bless, protection from evil and good, etc. Additionally the only real effective spells you'll get from this campaign on the Watchers Spell list are Paladin Spells and you wont get them until lvl 9 or 13. By that point a Devotion Paladin is getting Cleric Spells that for the most part are better to have on top of those Paladin spells.

Agreed Heavy Armored Master is a feat you only take as a Paladin if you're a vhuman or if you get a free feat from the DM. I would not take it any other way.

Agree oath of devotion sacred weapon is huge .
Vs the saving throw abiliyy that might be only usefull in few key points .
I give you that but lvl 7 aura would be 100% vs
The anti charm aura that is only 10ft and the party im playing in going to be the only front liner besides the rogue , we have a ranger , warlock and other caster. So the lvl 7 aura against charmed only will be usefull to the rogue and also im playing a half elf so im inmune to charm.
And the campaign will go to lvl 14 or maube 15 but that would be at most and in ending.
So.yeah kinda tough decicion . But the watcher oath also kinda fits in the quest against demons kinda game of thrones and the white walkers . Dunno thoughts?
Any good suggestion on wich oath to choose and build for good paladin tank for desvent to avernus rangr lvl 1 - 13
Is my 2nd char so I would start a lvl 6
Im.not intetersted much in dealing damage
Mosly on taking hits and defend the party
Thanks

Take the tough feat if the DM allows for a free feat at level 1.
conquest wont help much since the campaign is descent to avernus mostly demons i would fight .
and dont think they can get frightned easily

Feats will come in very handy for building a tank that can take hits. In order, I'd recommend these:
A paladin in heavy armor with the first two feats should be able to take a LOT of damage.
I'd actually never recommend durable as a feat ever. Resilient Constitution is far more important to a Paladin that wants to be a tank than that.

agree that one im going for that and at lvl 8 i can max str or cha
my stats will be
18 str 18 con with resilent con and 18 cha
i have a 16 i can put on dex and 10 on wis and 6 on int.
Definitely CHA at that point, for your absurdly good aura. I maintain the Paladin L6 Aura is the best single class ability in the game.

I would like to point out that no Half elf's are not immune to being charmed. You have advantage on saving throws against it but can still be charmed.
