I'm building my Aasimar paladin to be a full tank so for fighting stile im thinking on the protector to cause disavantage on enemy attacks, also going for oath of the crown for taunts and control spells.
My doult is at lvl 4 what is more interesting:
taking the feat shield master to add more control moves
or go for the atributes and increase my charisma to 20
I'm new to playing but my opinion since you're still a "lower" lvl max out cha then take shield master later.
My reasoning is at the lower levels you're gonna want the highest AC and HP possible to tank as opposed to getting everyone to focus on you and you don't have the hp to stay in the fight.
Protection is not as good as it looks. First, you need an adjacent ally, which won’t happen much, then it costs a reaction to maybe force a miss. I’d suggest defense. If you’re tanking, the +1to AC means you’re hit less, much more useful and reliable.
Oh, I don’t know about a 20 cha. An 18 is really, really good, and safe to just sit on. My first instinct is to say a half feat. For example, if you use a sword, you can take slasher, which will round up your str, and let you slow down enemies so they can’t get to the people behind you. Or if you have some kind of bludgeoning weapon (warhammer, flail), crusher, again rounds up that odd number in str, and let’s you push enemies around. As a fun addition, they both can work with thrown weapons (hand axes and light hammers, respectively) so if you don’t have the movement to get somewhere, you can still activate the battlefield control aspects from 20 feet away. And hitting someone with a hammer from 20’ away so hard the get knocked back 5’ is pretty cool.
Those may not meet the video game definition of tanking, but they do keep enemies off your allies, which is really the whole goal of tanking. Then at 8, you could go shield master, and you’ll have the higher str bonus, so you’ll be more effective with your shoving.
i didnt think of those but it's a interesting imput. My idea is not the classic video game tank but to protect the others from harm. Im play in a very selfless way so i want to take things that helps me keep my party member safe ^^
Defender is probably the best option i already got 20 AC without it but tere is never enoth AC ^^ and im also going to use shield of faith so going to be fun :)
I’d really take a look at crusher. You can move people around, for free. They don’t get a save or skill check to resist, they just move. Then your allies get to run away without taking an OA or disengaging.
And hitting more often keeps your allies safe. The faster you kill the enemy, the sooner everyone is out of danger.
If you really want to be the most helpful to your team, Bless is a way better spell to cast than Shield of Faith. SoF helps you get hit slightly less often. Bless helps everyone (upcasting is worthwhile) hit more and fails saves less. When the whole party hits more and fails saves less, bad guys and critters die faster which is the best way to keep everyone safe.
There’s almost never any reason not to cast Bless. It’s arguably the best buff spell in the game. Smites are a pretty good reason not to cast or at least upcast Bless; Shield of Faith is kinda not.
I know that protector or defense may come to mind when you think "I wanna build a tank," but if we're getting right down to it, what you really want is duelist fighting style.
Let's say I'm the DM and I've just let loose a pack of wolves on the party. Your character might go first and be the one who's in the fray, but what would keep the wolves on you? They would see a person who's covered in head to toe in armor, and doesn't hit all that hard because you're rocking a +2 STR modifier and a one-handed weapon. There's no reason why they shouldn't ignore you and go straight for the squishy members instead, because you're not a perceivable threat and you're not worth the trouble because of all that AC. So, if you really wanted to tank, you want to incentivize the DM to send creatures to hit you, and that means having an AC that's not too high, while also upping your damage enough that you're enough of a threat that has to be dealt with.
Also, going with the above poster, using bless is a better choice over shield of faith.
btw with the oath of the crown i can channel divinty to this.
Champion Challenge. As a bonus action, you issue a challenge that compels other creatures to do battle with you. Each creature of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature can’t willingly move more than 30 feet away from you. This effect ends on the creature if you are incapacitated or die or if the creature is more than 30 feet away from you.
So i do got a mass taunt beside compelled duel.
As for the Duelist style sounds like a interesting interaction and i can see how that makes more likely to get the attention from the mobs around. I got a flail and a long sword, i liked alot the slasher feat, tho that sentinel feat can be just amazing with bless and other bonus i may aquire.
For half feats you wear Plate I would take consider heavy armor master. There is also skill expertise.
You could also take an ASI now and raise both strength 1 and Charisma 1 and then take a Charisma half feat like Fey Touched at level 8 for a 20 charisma.
Personally I would wait until later to take crusher or slasher because I would not want to get locked into a certain type of weapon this early in the campaign.
Op, sounds like you are still lower level if deciding on first feat.
Shield master is great. However at your level higher cha will benefit the party. Later on when you fight things that do AoE dex save damage then that feat will save you lots of damage.
Pick up a belt of Giant strength asap and make sure to be proficient in athletics for the bonus action shield shoves. This will allow you to use str as a dump stat and keep cha/con going as high as possible.
Keep in mind that shield shoves from shield master are bonus actions and thus if you have other Paladin bonus actions you'd rather do then this will compete.
Also keep in mind at higher levels everything will be pretty big so unless you are large in size you will most likely not be able to shove huge and larger creatures.
However the Dex save and evasion are still worth it.
Shield Master is good, but you may only use it once per turn, to protect an ally within five feet, and it costs your reaction.
I'd take a point in strength and a point in something else where you were planning on taking a "half feat" later. As a paladin, a Charisma of 18 is pretty darn good. Many paladins don't get their Charisma up to 18 before the campaign ends.

Mechanically defense is probably better, especially if you are in a small party, but protection is more fun and if you have another melee type ally that will set it up it can be just about as good.
