My girlfriend is playing a Devotion paladin and is doing longsword/shield and took the shieldmaster feat, we just hit lvl 5 so now she has 2 attack actions and 1 bonus action. The feat of shieldmaster says as long as you do an attack action you can attempt to do a chance to try and shove creature to prone, so my question can she attack once use bonus action to try and shove creature to prone then use the other attack action and get advantage?
I play a paladin with that feat, and my DM is holding to the rule of attack then bash. Sure, it would be nice to give myself advantage, but it's worked out pretty well with team tactics. Just give your allies a standing order of "If you go after me, attack what I'm attacking for advantage." It's basically a bonus action "help" action since it has a high success rate. Just throwing that out in case your DM decides to stick with the ruling.
RAW, the feat just says that you have to make a melee attack and hit with it, it says nothing about having to make all of your attacks if you have the ability to make more that one attack from a feature like Extra Attack or the Nick weapon mastery. So as a level 5 character with extra attack and dual-wielding scimitars, you should be able to attack once, shield bash to knock them prone, then make your Nick attack and your Extra Attack with advantage.

If you take an action, you take an action. You cannot save half of it for later. This is no different than moving between attacks.

"Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are to fast: I would catch it."
"I cannot comment on an ongoing investigation."
"Well of course I know that. What else is there? A kitten?"
"You'd like to think that, Wouldn't you?"
"A duck."
"What do you mean? An African or European swallow?"

Except you can save half of your attack for later. Characters with multiple attacks are explicitly allowed to move between them if they have movement available.

How are you dual wielding scimitars and have a shield equipped? You have three hands?

There is a playable species, the Thri-Kreen, that has four hands and can do exactly this.

Very true. But I’m 95% sure that’s not what the person was talking about and didn’t want to complicate things 😁

I am actually playing a Thri-Kreen Vengeance Paladin wielding a Shortsword, Scimitar, Rapier, and Shield at the moment. Forgot that not everyone has all the extra hands for a moment.

Ha! Well, that explains it. Good thing I left open that 5%.

Is she doing such attack with the weapon or with the Shield ????
If only D&D could make an improvement about shield masters, then I will use also one of my characters I have in mind like Capt. America did. And since they don't get an improvement on the range of that covering feat ( around 5 or 10 ft from the Paladin ), is a bit sad.

From a strictly rules-as-written, pedantic point of view, no. You have to complete the Attack action first to take the bonus action from the Shield Master feat.
From a practical point of view, ask your DM. A lot of people allow it.

My bad, but the rest of my point still stands, as that is a specific exception listed in the rules.

Seeing how this was a very old thread, it was answered back in 2019.
