So, I have this idea for a basically a killer for hire who hides in the shadows and kills you when you least expect it. Use Canny from Tasha's to get Expertise in Stealth, take the Soldier background for Intimidation (the only social skill really needed) but modify it so get the Crminal background's Contact perk instead. At some point a level of Rogue for Expertise in Athletics and Intimidation will also be taken.
With SPA the stats would be Str 10, Dex 16 (15+1) Con 16 (14+2) Int 12 Wisdom 13 and Charisma 8.
Making it a Warforged really goes well with the whole "killer cyborg" theme but I wanted to make sure I have access to the spell Invisibility (for obvious reasons). The easiest way to do this is of course taking the Shadow Touched feat for the spell and +1 to Wisdom. Now what do I do with the other spell you get from Shadow Touched? You already get Disguise self from being a Gloom Stalker and most of the rest of the options rely on my spell casting DC which will be pretty crappy. Right now it stands between Disguise self (a free casting once per day is always useful), Cause Fear and Inflict Wounds. What do you think?
I think I'd switch the Con and Wis in that lineup... You really want your perception to be high, as well as your Initiative, so get that Wis bonus in there. I might even go point buy to drop your Int to 10 - that 12 isn't helping anything.
If you're going to take a level of Rogue, take it at first for the extra skills and expertise all along.
Inflict Wounds is nasty at low level, but drops off pretty quickly... Cause Fear is always useful and is totally thematic... but honestly, I chose Inflict Wounds myself in that scenario.

Don't really need the extra skill from starting out as a Rogue (nor the extra skill you get from multiclassing into Ranger) but good point about Expertise and wanting a high Wisdom. The only problem is that it would leave me with a second odd ability score that I can't round of easily. Guess I could take Skill Expert at some point, that's always a good one.
Your exposure to the Shadowfell’s magic has changed you, granting you the following benefits:
Increase your Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
You learn the invisibility spell and one 1st-level spell of your choice. The 1st-level spell must be from the illusion or necromancy school of magic. You can cast each of these spells without expending a spell slot. Once you cast either of these spells in this way, you can’t cast that spell in this way again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spells using spell slots you have of the appropriate level. The spells’ spellcasting ability is the ability increased by this feat.
So for spells, I'd be looking at:
Cause Fear - Solid choice throughout, but your save DC isn't going to be amazing
Color Spray - Starts off great, but is going to fall off fast. 6d10 HP is going to lose potency fast.
Disguise Self - I know that you get this as a Gloomstalker anyway, but one more use per day is solid - this might just be your best bet long term. Plus, I like the idea of a warforged assassin 'changing shape' to look like someone else.
Inflict Wounds - 3d10 damage at a touch is 3d10 damage...
Ray of Sickness - poisoned is nasty, but it's a CON save
Silent Image - I could see this being conditionally useful, but I'd probably just go with Disguise Self.
So, a but more thinking. If I go point buy I can start out with Str 10, Dex 16 (15+1) Con 15 (13+2) Int 10 Wisdom 15 and Charisma 8. Starting as a Ranger for slightly higher HP and (IMO) better saving throw proficiences (at least more common ones) I can get profiencenes in Investigation, Perception and Stealth, Arcana from being a warforged and Intimidation and Athletics from the Soldier background. Canny will give me Expertise in Stealth. Level 2 will be a level of Rogue for Expertise in Athletics (climbing around to get the drop on people in dark rooms) and Intimidation (because scary robots are scary, and thus fun!). At level 5 I can get my first feat for Shadow Touched to boost my Wisdom to 16. Question is, should I then go Dex+2 for the second ASI or take something like Skill Expert (or Chef, just for the hell of it) to bump my Con to 16?
As a side note I will most likely take TWF as my Fighting Style.
hmmm... I dig it, but I'd be more inclined to go Rogue for 1st level, then Ranger... otherwise, it's much better.
Shadow touched is solid for the first ASI, but I'd hold off on deciding the second. See what you do with the character, and work out your game play. Who knows?
(Alert is amazing for a Gloomstalker, btw... make sure you get that first round off, etc... and it seems good for a scary robot)
I prefer getting the extra few HPs from Ranger and Strength saves are more common than Int saves. But yeah, Alert is really useful and works well with the concept.

But to go back to your original question...
Shadow Touched gets you the following:

Yeah, Disguise Self is probably the most alround useful spell. Thanks for the input!
If you already have disguise self from gloom stalker, then I would recommend Silent Image. Cause Fear makes sense for a Gloom Stalker.
This difficulty is why I prefer Fey Touched but that won't help you with your invisibility problem.
