I've been looking to make a Beast Master Ranger using the new Primal Companion rules introduced in Tashas. In saying that I have some questions about RAW and was wondering if anyone had some insight into them. 1. Can you swap which type of beast you summon each day? (ie, Day one beast of land day two beast of sky, day three beast of land again, etc)
2. Does the summoned beast last until you summon a different beast? similar to a regular companion, or is there a time limit on how long it sticks around.
3. Does it use the actions in the Beast stat block regardless of the type of creature is appears as? (ie if you had a giant snake could it cause it's poison damage)
4. Is the number of uses on your character sheet the HP or your Primal Beast? or something else
"When you finish a long rest, you can summon a different primal beast" ... "you choose its stat block and appearance." So yes, just like preparing new spells for a prepared spell class.
Yes, just like find familiar. Also if you die (but not if you just go unconscious). No time span, just low HP. For something that has a limited time span, compare to the druid Wildfire Spirit.
It only gets the actions from its stat block. If you make it look like a giant snake, that's just flavor - you're not summoning a giant snake, you're summoning a beast of the land (note that the Primal Companion replaces the regular Ranger's Companion feature, you can't use both).
The rules mention nothing about limited uses for summoning the beast. So if you see 20 when you choose the feature at level 3, that's HP. If you're seeing a number lower than 20, you'll have to link your sheet.
#4. The number of uses is just a dnd beyond feature use it however you like. HP seems to be the intended work around. Unfortunately the dnd beyond Pet mechanics are still not quite implemented in a intuitive UI.
3. The tasha's version Requires only one of those three stat blocks. if you want poison the PHB beasmaster is the way to go. The action economy Feels weird but My self and several others find it to be the superior option. {unique traits, less spell BA conflict, better "ready" options, more flavor. Ect}
Does anyone know how to actually implement the primal companion into a DnD Beyond character sheet?
I can't see any of the individual sale items in Tasha's cauldron that would unlock the primordial companion rules/feature. In the extras sheet, I can't find any option for 'beast of the sky', and the customisation options for the other creatures don't seem flexible enough to easily mimic the primordial companion options.
Maybe I'm just missing something, so if someone has a solution would appreciate advice.
It's an optional class feature, not a new feature, since it interacts with the PHB subclass. Therefore the only option for purchase (for all of the 'optional features') is to purchase the whole book. They did not make them available for separate purchase. At least there's a sale on right now.
Once you've purchased it, you have to then turn on optional class features as a preference in the first panel of the character editing tool, then use the 'tabs' in the class panel to select from the optional features for the class (as opposed to, say, optional race features on the race panel).

Thank you for any help y'all can give.

Thanks for the advice pocketmouse.
I don't think I'll buy the full book just for that but it's good to know at least.
If you want suggestions on making the phb ranger work there's a couple of us who could help.
There's also content sharing if your dm owns it on dnd beyond.
