Hey everyone, I'm creating a character who is going to multiclass (ranger and rogue). Our DM plans on this campaign being pretty lengthy but I don't know how long so I'm trying to decide how many levels of each class I want to take all the way up to level 20. Should I do 11-9, 10-10, 8-12, or 5-15 (where the first number is my # of ranger levels and the second is rogue)? I know that this is largely up to personal preference as there are pros and cons to all of them and it will alter play style a bit, but I'm a very indecisive person so I'd like to hear some other people's opinions to help me decide. Thanks!
12 levels of rogue mean I have reliable talent, evasion and uncanny dodge. Also, I get the extra ASI at level 10. You can pick your favorite subclass but I suggest Scout, Inquisitive or Assassin. I am assuming you are using a bow.
Gloomstalker 5 gets you extra attack, a fighting style (archery) some spells (hunter's mark) and some extra damage with an free additional attack in the first round with an additional 1d8 damage. Also, you can play a Variant Human to get the free feat and still have darkvision. Just an idea if you don't have a strong backstory yet and just looking at optimization
Battlemaster will give you techniques for extra effects and damage, action surge for a nova round, second wind for some healing, and a second fighting style (defense?). Superiority dice will come back on a short rest so you could have multiple encounters with damage add.
This build, variant human multiclass, will have 6 Feats by the end. 1 from Race, 4 from Rogue and 1 from Ranger. I suggest having Sharpshooter, Crossbow Expert perhaps, Observant (wisdom), resilient (wisdom) in your selection. Gloomstalkers add Wisdom to initiative. Maybe take +2 Dex with the other 2. My game rolled stats so I had a 19 at level 1 in Dex.
So one trouble with Rogue and Ranger is your bonus action is going to be very, very clogged (but the good side is you will always be using it). Your first big decision is melee or archery. If you go archery well the build is really easy. You probably want to avoid some of the more bonus action heavy subclasses of Ranger, but Gloom Stalker/Fey Wander are both great. As for how far to go there are a couple of thoughts there. Extra attack and 2nd level spells is a good power spike to stop it, but I would go higher for some of the Ranger subclasses. One issue to be concerned is that 2nd rogue subclass feature at 9 can be a long time to wait even single classed. You may never get to it with a multiclass build. That is not big deal for some builds, but for something like Phantom that may be a problem.
We are starting at level 3 and my Ranger Archetype is Hunter mainly for plot reasons and because it doesn't conflict with anyone else in our party. Obviously, I chose it before I decided to multiclass, but I am not really in a place to change it. As for the Roguish Archetype, I was actually planning on going with Scout. I'm also going to be taking the Elven Ancestry feat at level 4 as I am a half-elf. Thanks for your thoughts, everything is very helpful!
Hunter is not bad. Extra damage is good. Still take it to level 5 to get extra attack. Scout is also a good choice. The reaction to move out of melee without provoking AoO is good. Expertise in Nature and Survival will allow you to pick different skills if you already selected them at earlier levels.
I still recommend picking up 3 levels of battlemaster, or maybe samurai if you want. Samurai combined with elven accuracy is a strong combo since you can give yourself advantage as a class feature

I have done this combo a couple of times. Here was the one that I played the most
Rogue 12/Gloomstalker Ranger 5/Battlemaster Fighter 3
