Hi everyone, I want to make a ranged ranger (with longbow as my weapon). We will start at lv 6, and I will at least have a lv 3 in gloomstalker. I will be playing a harengon. I'm thinking about having the other three levels into either fighter or cleric. Is there a recommendation?
It really depend if you want more caster or martial abilities. I'd also look at party composition as i don't like to play same class. The downside of multiclassing this way though is that you delay the Feat/Ability Score Increase and Extra Attack features.
I prefer level 5+ Gloomstalker Ranger Hand Crossbow Expert..
I'd agree that starting at level 6, you want level 5 in the martial side before multi classing. Missing that extra attack is a bad, bad thing for most of the martials as it cuts your damage output so badly. Also to note, a flat level 6 Gloomstalker is a pretty solid DPR character, so there is zero problem going that route.
So far as multi and what would work best, the above mentioned knowing party makeup would help a lot. More importantly, what you want for the character is what should guide you. A solid melee fighting character with a very small number of spells, (Ranger/Fighter) or a decent melee character with a decent selection of spellcasting options (Ranger/Cleric) If the group is leaning on you for a lot of melee work, the Fighter might be a good pick, for an additional fighting style to address the times when ranged isn't a option, as well as subclass abilities as you level. If you find your group spell starved as it were, Clerics have a good spell list and their subclasses let you grab some other stuff that can make up for a magic-lacking team. I'd say it's a combination of what YOU want to play and what the group might need, putting more emphasis on what YOU want over what the group might like.

Just another agreement with going level 5 for your ranger to get an extra attack on your turn. Both fighter and cleric are a good multiclass choices. Based on you saying you want to play a "ranged" ranger, consider taking a level of Rogue to get sneak attack at level 1. At your next level up, take 2nd level Rogue for cunning action feature; this is where it helps with range/ staying out of melee. Disengage, hide or dash as a bonus action gets you moving and that's before even using your movement.
Another thought - think about taking 1st level spell Zephyr Strike (extra movement- no opportunity attack- can trigger sneak attack)
All that said ..play the character you want and enjoy !!

Def get lvl 5 as your Ranger before split off. But ranged gloom is awesome I run a crossbow expert version for roll play. He’s a lot of fun.
